Supernatural (TV series)

Concept and Development

Before Supernatural became a television series, its creator Eric Kripke had been developing the project for almost ten years ^[8] , having been fascinated by urban legends from early childhood ^[9] . Originally introducing Supernatural as a movie ^[10] , Kripke spent years translating ideas into a television series ^[11] . The concept has changed several times, moving from the original idea of ​​an anthology series and the idea of ​​two reporters who “wander around the country and fight demons in search of truth” to the final draft of the television series ^{[9] [12]} . Kripke wanted it to be a travel television series, feeling that it’s “the best way to tell these stories, as it’s clean, concise and unique in American ... These stories exist in small towns across the country, and it means a lot we plunge into them and then leave ” ^[9] .

Since he had previously written the script for another The WB television series “ ”, Kripke took the opportunity to present ideas to the leadership of the channel and launch “Supernatural” ^[10] . Nevertheless, the television channel did not like the idea of ​​reporters, and Kripke proposed his idea, invented at the last minute, that the heroes were brothers, for which he received approval ^[13] . He decided that the brothers should be from Lawrence , Kansas because of his proximity to the Stall cemetery, which became the scene of many urban legends ^[14] .

When it came time to give names to the main characters, Kripke dwelled on the names “Sal” and “Dean” to make homage to the main characters of Jack Kerouac ’s travel novel “ On the Road ”. Nevertheless, he considered the name Sal not suitable for the main character and changed it to “Sam” ^[7] . It was originally planned that the surname of the brothers would be “Harrison”, as a bow to actor Harrison Ford and because Kripke wanted Dean to look like Han Solo. However, a real person Sam Harrison lived in Kansas and had to change his surname for legal reasons ^[15] . Combining his interest in the Winchester House and his desire to make the “modern western” from the series, Kripke settled on the name “Winchester”. However, there was a problem. The first name of Sam and Dean's father was “Jack”, and the real Jack Winchester lived in Kansas, and Kripke was forced to change his name to “John” ^[15] .

As a child, Kripke loved television shows in which automobiles such as The Dukes of Hazzard and The Knight of Roads played a big role. This prompted him to turn on the machine and in the "Supernatural" ^[16] . He planned that it would be a 1965 Ford Mustang , but a neighbor convinced him to change the car to a 1967 Chevrolet Impala , arguing that “you can put a body in the trunk,” and because “you want such a machine so that people who stop nearby with her at the traffic lights, blocked the door ” ^[7] .

Kripke had previously offered the project to Fox producer Peter Johnson, and when Johnson joined Wonderland Sound and Vision as a television director, he contacted Kripke ^[17] . Johnson soon became the co-executive producer of the television series, as did Wonderland owner McGee, executive producer, and the company took on the production of the pilot episode. Nevertheless, before you could start shooting, you had to work a lot on the script. Initially, according to the scenario, the brothers were not raised by their father, but by their aunts and uncles. Therefore, when Dean first comes to Sam for help in the first episode, he first had to convince him that the supernatural exists. However, Kripke decided that this made the backstory too confusing and reworked it with Peter Johnson in such a way that the brothers were raised by their father to become hunters ^[18] . The script went through many revisions and additions. According to one idea, Sam Jessica's girl turned out to be a demon, and this was what prompted him to go on a journey with Dean; Kripke thought that the death of Jessica would be a more suitable motivation, and she was killed in the same way as Sam’s mother, which gave the show the correct setting ^[19] . On other rejected ideas, Sam decides that Dean is the serial killer who killed their father ^[20] or their father dies in Jessica’s house ^[21] . The filming of the pilot episode was given a green light after director David Nutter , who had previously worked with Kripke on "Tarzan," gave his consent to shoot it ^{[22] [23]} . When the TV channel ordered the series, the studio appointed Robert Singer as executive producer, as she wanted Kripke to work with someone who has experience in producing. Thanks to his work experience on The X-Files , co-executive producer John Sheeban was hired to work on the mythology of the television series ^[24] . Kripke planned that the show would continue for three seasons, but later he decided to increase the number of seasons to five ^[25] and hoped that the series would end on a high note ^[26] . However, due to the high ratings and requests of fans of the series, fourteen seasons have already been shot. And the studio management does not intend to stop there.

Scriptwriting Team

The team of the first season consisted of Kripke and five other scriptwriters along with assistants recruited to help search for urban legends ^[10] . Most of the scripting work on the series is collaborative, and screenwriters often assembled in groups to work on. At the beginning of each season, all screenwriters come together and offer their ideas, which are later transferred to a specific screenwriter for processing. Each story idea was written on a whiteboard, and Kripke and Bob Singer made the necessary changes. After writing the script ^[27], Kripke looked at him to make sure that the series will be in the spirit of the whole season ^[10] . Kripke noted that it was very difficult to do for the first season ^[28] , but by the third season his work was easier, as the team “really got into the style of the show” ^[28] .

The spirit of the television series “Supernatural” has been significantly affected by films such as: “ Poltergeist ” - horrors happen in the family, “The Evil Dead 2 ” and “ American Werewolf in London ” - comedy elements are present. Commenting on the format of the show, Kripke said the idea is that horrors can happen in your backyard. How many viewers will worry about a vampire in a gothic castle? ^[7] Other films that have influenced Asian horror films include Eye and Bell . ^[29]

According to creator Eric Kripke, initially the show was supposed to be focused on weekly monsters, and Sam and Dean Winchester were supposed to be only connecting links ^[30] . His idea was only to “scare people” ^[31] . However, after several episodes that were shot, Kripke and Bob Singer spotted chemistry on the screen between Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles . This discovery encouraged them to focus the show more on brothers than on monsters, adjusting the line with the monsters to the storyline that was planned for the Winchesters ^[30] .

Special Effects

Although the companies were hired to work only on the pilot episode - such as Entity FX for visual effects ^[32] - special effects departments began to work exclusively for the series ^[33] . Ivan Hayden was responsible for visual effects and worked with a large number of different production personnel of the series. During the production preparation, Hayden had to look through the scenarios to find possible places for using special effects. Then he met with scriptwriters to discuss the concept, and after working out all the details, he coordinated the special effects and stuntmen departments. Hayden is also present during filming to help the director make sure the scenes are shot in the best possible way for visual effects, ensuring that the actors are looking at the right place where the effect will be added later. After that, he met with the editors ^[34] . Another aspect of the work of the visual effects department is the development of the rules of physics for each supernatural creature ^[34] , although these rules were often ignored if this benefited the story ^[33] . In 2012, it was announced that Hayden would be working at a new location for Encore in Vancouver in the visual effects department ^[35] .

Music

The “Supernatural” feature is a synthesized orchestral score, although traditional acoustic instruments such as guitar and cello are also used. Special instruments were also used in some episodes, such as blues music, which was performed on the old piano in the episode "Faith". Unlike other television shows, two composers worked on the television series: Christopher Lennerz and Jay Grushka ^[36] . Each composer worked on every second episode, giving the other extra time to write a score, which usually ended up lasting about 30 minutes per episode. They wrote musical themes for their own episodes and characters, working with each other if episode plots overlap. They tried to base the music on the footage of the episode, as in the episode “Dead in Water”, in which the frames with water are accompanied by repeating and dissonant notes, and after the words “water” and “die” there is a low-pitched sound to create a “gurgling” sound ^[37] . There is a similarity in musical accompaniment, for example, in scenes with brothers and their father, but a third of the music for each season had to be rewritten ^[36] .

If the original score is used throughout the episodes, another important aspect of the series is the use of classic rock. Eric Kripke threatened to leave the series if the channel did not allow him to use this music. Most of the songs are from the private Kripke collection. The songs of one of his favorite bands Led Zeppelin are too expensive to use on television, and only the names of some episodes are references to the songs of Led Zeppelin ^[38] . Groups such as Blue Öyster Cult , Bad Company , Stevie Ray Won , Rush , Boston , Triumph and AC / DC have performed more than once on the series. At the beginning of the last episode of each season, the song “ Carry On Wayward Son ” is usually performed by Kansas , while the main events of the season are briefly shown on the screen ^[39] .

Location

Although the pilot episode was filmed in Los Angeles , the main filming took place in Vancouver , British Columbia ^[20] . Thus, shooting on the ground, as a rule, also took place in the vicinity of the city. The episode Dead in Water was filmed on Lake Bantzen ^[40] , and the final scenes from Simon Says were filmed on Cleveland's Dam ^[41] . Other places are often used on the show two or three times with decoration to hide it ^[42] . Herabyge Park in Burnaby was used as a cemetery in the episode "Scarlet Dawn" and as a neighborhood of the gingerbread house (cottage) in "Bedtime Stories" ^[43] . In addition, the Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam was used in the series as completely different institutions, including a psychiatric hospital in the episode “Psychiatric Hospital” ^[44] , a hospital in “When My Death Hour Will Come” ^[45] , and a prison in “Folsom Prison Blues” " ^[45] . The episode "Promised Heaven" was filmed in kind at St. Andrew Wesley United Church in Vancouver. Since episodes usually take place off the beaten path, filming often took place at an old military base. The base was closed for many years, and the buildings were demolished; only roads remained intact, on which scenes of the road were shot ^[46] .

Antagonists

The series focuses on two brothers Sam Winchester and Dean Winchester, whose roles were played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles ; they travel around the country and prey on evil supernatural creatures, mostly demons. Padalecki became interested in the role because of his love of horror television series such as The X-Files and The Twilight Zone , which he found similar to The Supernatural. He was always interested in playing the role of a “reluctant hero”, comparing Sam with Neo from The Matrix and Luke Skywalker from Star Wars . The Padalecki already had experience working with executive producers McGee and David Nutter ^[47] , and they convinced him to come to audition for the role ^[48] . Eccles was originally invited by Nutter to audition for the role of Sam ^[49] , but he preferred to play Dean after reading the script ^[50] . While listening, he already played one of the regular roles in The WB's Smallville Secrets television series. After he was approved for the role of Dean, his role in “Smallville Secrets” was reduced and cut out of the script ^[51] .

Although the television series does not have a large number of protagonists, there are many secondary characters. Jeffrey Dean Morgan played the role of John Winchester, the father of Sam and Dean. After appearing in the pilot episode, John does not return almost until the end of the first season, when he becomes a minor character until his death in the premiere episode of the second season. In the final of the same season, John returns as a ghost to help his sons. Later in the series, it turns out that John had a third son from another woman, who is the half brother of Sam and Dean. According to screenwriter John Shiban, it was decided in advance that John would die. The scriptwriters considered the fact of the separation of the brothers from their father a “splitting show”. Shiban noted that “... the guys are looking for their father and looking for monsters of the week, no matter who they are or whatever stands in their way. It becomes complicated because we thought it looked like this: “What is dad doing? Does he do more interesting things than guys, or what? ”” ^[52] . They believed that Morgan was not eager to return to the “Supernatural” in the second season, as he had a secondary role in the “ Anatomy of Passion ” ^[53] . Also in the first season were presented demon Azazel and his nameless daughter. If Azazel appears mainly as a shadow or silhouette, taking on physical form only when he settles in John Winchester, Azazel’s daughter uses a girl named Meg Masters ( Nikki Acox ) as a vessel ^[55] . In the premiere episode of the second season, the body that Azazel occupied was played by Fredrik Lena ; initially a character designed for only one episode, Lena was so impressed with the show runners that they invited him to return to the two-hour finale of the season ^[56] . Even after his own death, Azazel appears in the fourth season, and his role was played by Christopher B. McCabe and Mitch Pileggi in the episode about the time travel “In the Beginning” and Rob Labelle in the flashback in the final series of the season. In the same way, when Azazel’s daughter was expelled from Meg’s body near the end of the first season, the demon and her former container continued to appear in the series, but as different characters. Aykoks played the role of the enraged spirit of Meg, who tried to kill the Winchesters; the demon returns in an episode of the second season, and Padalecki played it, as the demon temporarily took possession of Sam's body. She appears from the fifth to eighth seasons in a minor role performed by Rachel Miner .

Additional advertising posters were placed in bars, cinemas and video game stores, and hundreds of bars also received "supernatural" napkins and coasters ^[99] .

The series also has real things. The site of urban legends Hellhounds Lair from an episode of the first season called “Hell's House” was at one time a real site created by the producers of the show ^[101] . In the episode "Spirit Tamers," the owners of the Hellhounds Lair website create their own show like Ghostbusters, and The CW launched Ghostfacers.com ^[102] . In the episode of the fourth season of "This Terrible Life," Winchesters go to this site. However, this has spread not only to the Internet. The cell number of Dean (1-866-907-3235), which became known in the episode "The Phantom Wanderer" ^[103] , was really real and worked, and Jensen Ackles read the message on the answering machine: “This is Dean Winchester. If this is an emergency, leave a message. If you call about November 2, 1983, tell me your coordinates. ” ^[104] In the episode "Non-fiction" of the second season, there were references to the publication of the weekly world news of that week. Exclusive interviews with Sam and Dean, written by Paul Kapperberg ^{[105] [106]} , were published in issues of February 19 and March 19, 2007.

Comics

The television series has also expanded its universe. Three comic book mini-series, each of six issues, were published by WildStorm , a subsidiary of DC Comics . The comic Supernatural: Origins tells of the early life of Sam, Dean, and their father and how John became a hunter. ^[108] “Supernatural: The Growing Son” ( Eng. Supernatural: Rising Son ) talks about Dean, who begins to follow in his father's footsteps ^[109] . Kripke took a large part in the creation of the first series, but the writers' strike did not allow him to do the same with “The Growing Son” ^[109] . “Supernatural: The Beginning's End ” ( English Supernatural: Beginning's End ) describes the various events that prompted Sam to leave his family and go to Stanford.

The fourth mini-series “Caledonia” ( English Caledonia ), which was released in the UK under the title “Supernatural: Dogs of Edinburgh” ( English Supernatural: The Dogs of Edinburgh ), written by Brian Wood and Grant Bond and talks about the journey of Sam Winchester to Edinburgh in the years when he studied at Stanford ^[110] . The first two mini-series were written by Peter Johnson, one of the co-executive producers of the television series, and the authors of the third comic were the scriptwriters of the show, Andrew Dubb and Daniel Loflin ^[111] .

Растущая популярность «охотников-любителей» Эда Зеддмора и Гарри Спенглера побудила Крипке выпустить спин-офф сериал с этими персонажами. Он обсудил возможность осуществления проекта с актёрами А. Дж. Бакли и Тревисом Уэстером и боссами на студии и телеканале ^[115] . Получив положительный результат на всех трёх переговорах, Крипке представил веб-сериал «Укротители духов» ( англ. Блудные сёстры

20 июня 2017 был анонсирован спин-офф «Сверхъестественного» под названием «Блудные сёстры». По задумке сценаристов сюжет сериала должен был развиваться вокруг группы девушек, столкнувшихся с паранормальными силами ^[126] . Встроенный пилот спин-оффа вошёл в тринадцатый сезон «Сверхъестественного».
