Biography

Came from the noble nobles of the Oryol province; was the third son of Ivan Ivanovich Bakhtin [1] . At the end of the Kharkov gymnasium in 1812 he joined the clerk in the Kharkov provincial government. With his father moving to St. Petersburg in 1815, he decided on an expedition to audit accounts, where his father was a manager; a year later, he moved to the office of the Secretary of State for the adoption of applications for the highest name brought and remained there until 1823. In 1822, he received a diploma from St. Petersburg University .

He was one of the strongest chess players in St. Petersburg. (I. Linder. At the origins of chess culture. - P. 63). D. N. In 1823, N. I. Bakhtin entered the chapter of orders; this appointment allowed him to be abroad as secretary to the Chancellor of Orders, Alexei Borisovich Kurakin . In 1825 he entered the Provincial Department of the Ministry of War.

Since 1827, he was under the chief of the naval headquarters, adjutant general Prince Menshikov, and participated with him in 1828 in a sea ​​expedition to Anapa . In 1843 , having received the rank of Privy Councilor , he was appointed Secretary of State . In 1853 he was appointed a member of the State Council for the Department of State Economy. Bakhtin worked hard when considering a draft new charter of civil proceedings and was a staunch advocate of judicial reform; then, as a member of the main committee on the arrangement of the rural state, where he was appointed on February 19, 1861 , Nikolai Ivanovich Bakhtin with his characteristic energy supported the complete and land-free liberation of the peasants. As chairman of the commission for drafting the recruitment charter, he indicated the need for a radical change in the old system; He also worked in the commission on the destruction of farms.

Nikolai Ivanovich Bakhtin died, being an unofficial member of the State Council, with the rank of active privy councilor and holder of the Order of St. Vladimir , 1st class.

Son - Nikolai Nikolaevich Bakhtin , translator, poet. He financially supported the large family of a cousin Elizabeth Andreevna, who was married to a real state councilor Mikhail Petrovich Shurinov (1827-1889).
