Arrangement
All the stringed instruments in this song - two guitars and bass - are tuned in a standard musical structure : E , A , D , G , B , E. The original recording introduces Asian instruments, such as gong and sitar , in combination with superimposed on them twelve-string bass guitar Warwick . Throughout the rest of the song, the traditional four-string bass is used in standard tuning.
The song is often performed by the group at concerts, in particular, it was performed at a concert with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Kamen . During the live performance in the intro a real sitar is used, recorded on a phonogram, but at a concert with the San Francisco orchestra, guitarist Kirk Hammett performed this introduction live on a Danelectro electric headset . In contrast, bass guitarist Jason Newsted never used a 12-string bass for this song.
Song Contents
The text of the song is narrated on behalf of a person who sees freedom in the rejection of the scab of property, who consciously wanders and protects only his inner world. To reflect in the music of such a wandering ascetic, a sitar is used in the introduction, which is associated with the Indian culture of the poor (nonjusting) intellectual wealth of the Brahmans. Possible artistic equi-rhythmic translations of the words of a song are represented by texts. Before me all the ways and Free as a wolf .
Demo
The demo version of the song was recorded by Lars Ulrich at his home studio Dungeon on August 13, 1990 .
Video Clip
A video for the song was presented on MTV on May 21, 1992. He was directed by Adam Dubin and Wayne Isham , who also worked on the video for the song Enter Sandman [1] . The clip is a cutting concert and backstage video from the tour Wherever I May Roam Tour.
