Biography

Mikhail Kotov was born on November 18, 1924 in the village of Verkhososna (now the Krasnogvardeisky district of the Belgorod region ). After graduating from five grades of school, he worked on a collective farm . In February 1943, Kotov was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since that time - on the fronts of World War II. By September 1943, Junior Sergeant Mikhail Kotov commanded a machine gun at the 985th Infantry Regiment of the 226th Infantry Division of the 60th Army of the Central Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of the Dnieper [1] .

September 27, 1943 Kotov crossed the Dnieper in the vicinity of the village of Tolokunskaya Rudnya, Vyshgorodsky district, Kiev region of the Ukrainian SSR and took an active part in the battles for the capture and retention of the bridgehead on its western shore, destroying several dozen enemy soldiers and officers [1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 17, 1943, Junior Sergeant Mikhail Kotov was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal [1] .

Mikhail Kotov died in battle in April 1944 [1] .
