Tatsugo Kawaysi was born in 1911 in Ogaki (now part of Etajima ) of Hiroshima Prefecture , graduated from Keio University . In 1932 he took part in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles , where he won the silver medal in the 100 m freestyle. Upon returning to Japan in 1933-1935, he worked as an instructor at the Academy of the Imperial Navy . Then he moved to Osaka and began working at Kansai Electric Power .
Soon Tatsugo Kawaysi was drafted into the army , and began to serve in the 11th Infantry Regiment stationed in the Hiroshima area. After the start of the war in China he was sent to the front, and in 5 years he rose to lieutenant. After demobilization, he returned to work at Kansai Electric, however, due to the deterioration of the situation on the fronts of World War II in June 1944, he was again called up for service and sent to Iwo Jima Island, where General Kuribayashi made him the commander of the northern defense sector. Tatsugo Kawaysi died during the Battle of Iwo Jima , and was posthumously promoted to captain.
