He graduated from the Prague Conservatory ( 1849 ), a student of Anton Trega . He worked and taught for several years in Vienna , and in 1852 he was invited to Zagreb, where he spent the rest of his life. He taught at the Zagreb Academy of Music , the founder of the Croatian cello school; among Ertle's students, in particular, Yuro Tkalchich . Since 1870 he also played in the Zagreb Opera Orchestra. In addition to playing the cello, Ertl was also a professor of music theory, he owns the first Croatian textbook on theory - “General theoretical and practical introduction to the science of music” ( Croatian Obćenita teoritično-praktična pripravna nauka glasbe ; 1880 ).
