Content

Research Areas

In historical demography, three main areas of research are conditionally distinguished:

  1. studies of the dynamics of the population size , composition and density , as well as migration and resettlement
  2. historical analysis of these processes and their social premises;
  3. the study of the role of demographic factors in the historical process and the historical conditionality of demographic processes.

Periodization

In historical demography, there are three periods depending on the sources - preliterate, pre- statistical , statistical .
Studies of the preliterate period are the subject of paleodemography using data from paleoanthropology , archeology and ethnography .
The scarcity and fragmentation of the demographic sources of the pre-statistical period, as well as the need to use indirect research, led to the development of special methods.
The most studied are sources on the West European demographic history of the XVI-XVIII centuries.
