Story

The protagonist of the novel Pathology is a special forces soldier fighting in Chechnya. A platoon of special forces from the Russian town of St. Spas arrives on a business trip to Grozny. Spetsnazovtsev 80 people, commander Semenych, castle platoon ulcer, platoon neck. So their name is subordinates. They pass through the ruined boring city and settle on the outskirts, in a former school, now abandoned and mined. They turn the school into a fortress and begin to count the days of the trip. They carry patrols, at night - crawling, they are languidly fired upon. The first days sleepily stretch without incident and serious danger. The guys are having fun, joking at each other, secretly violating the regime by drinking alcohol - and they don’t stop being afraid. Fear covers everyone, some do not hide it, most - they learn it; fear determines the actions and relationships of soldiers.

Work appears - stripping city facilities. Special forces kill the first 8 Chechens, getting drunk after the operation. The night shelling of the school does not stop, followed by several more sweeps and raids with victims among the local population and the destruction of militants. The storyteller Yegor Tashevsky at the airport sees the corpses of Russian demobilized soldiers who died as a result of betrayal and connivance of the command. This sight does not add optimism to his already gloomy mood. He is saved from fear only by memories of his dead father and his beloved Dasha.

At the next attack of fighters the first commandos die. Soldiers drink more and more, not hiding fear. When cleaning up another village, bandits who want to surrender are again shot. They do not take prisoners in violation of orders. After the battle, having lost several guys killed, the platoon gets drunk and falls into a drunken dream. The guards who had drunk left their posts, and Chechen fighters attack the school.

The last quarter of the story is dedicated to the description of the last battle. Egor, fearfully afraid, tries not to show fear and commands his squad. They kill almost the entire platoon, Tashevsky’s friend, Sanya, dies before his eyes. The commander Semenych (he was away, at headquarters, with a report) on 3 armored personnel carriers breaks out to rescue the shot children. Cars take the wounded, and the platoon continues to shoot. The fighters behave differently in the last battle: someone is cowardly, most are fighting. Semenych says that the militants attacked the whole city at the same time from all sides. The feds, that is, Russian troops, were not ready for the offensive, many were killed. The shooting of the school lasts for many hours, and the remaining commandos decide to leave through a ravine filled with mud and water from heavy rains. There’s nothing to shoot, the soldiers jump out of the window, they kill many. Egor escapes, floating in a dirty slurry. Together with the fighter Monk, who the hero never liked, they hide for a long time in the bush; The monk saves Yegor's life (previously Yegor thought about this). Having met several more survivors, commandos wandered in the morning on the road from the shot school; they were picked up by Russian formations who came to the rescue. Drunk, silent, devastated, the rescued soldiers return home to Holy Savior.
