History

At the beginning of the 20th century, the first Greek settlers from Cyprus and other Greek islands appeared in the British colony of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). C 1928 the territory of the country was part of the Johannesburg Metropolis .

On November 14, 1968, the Alexandrian Orthodox Church established the Rhodesian metropolis in order to better organize pastoral work [1] , isolating it from Johannesburg [2] .

Initially, the majority of the flock of the Zimbabwean metropolis were Greek and Cypriot émigrés, which appeared here since the beginning of the 20th century [3] .

With the independence of Zimbabwe on April 18, 1980, the diocese was renamed Zimbabwean. The diocese consisted of Zimbabwe , Angola , Malawi , Botswana and Mozambique .

In 1994, representatives of the indigenous population began to turn to Orthodoxy.

On September 23, 1997, the Diocese of Madagascar was separated from its composition. At this time, the mission revived among the local population.

Metropolitan Macarius (Tilliridis) , who occupied the Zimbabwean pulpit in 1998-2001, translated the liturgical texts into many African languages. Metropolitan Theodore (Horeftakis) (2002–2004) actively built churches, founded missionary centers and Greek cultural societies in the diocese, contributed to the organization of Greek communities in Botswana and Angola, opened a Greek school and a temple in the city of Beira in Mozambique. In addition to preaching, missionaries provide material and medical assistance to the local population [3] .

On November 1, 2006, the Mozambican Diocese was separated from the Zimbabwean, Malawi was transferred to the Zambian Diocese no later than 2010, and on October 7, 2010, Botswana was allocated to an independent diocese .

According to the Zimbabwean Metropolis in the second half of the 2000s, there were 15 temples in the diocese, 3 missionary centers, 1 hospital, 1 technical school, 1 kindergarten; 6 priests (4 priests and 2 deacons).
