Service History

The schooner "Nikolai" was built in 1847 in Orenburg under the supervision of P. S. Merthvago [3] , as a military vessel designed to explore the Aral Sea . Together with the schooner, “ Mikhail ” was disassembled in carts from Orenburg to Raim , where both ships were assembled and launched. In the same year, the schooner under the command of Lieutenant Mertvago went on her first voyage [1] . On the schooner during the summer of 1847, a part of the eastern coast was taken seventy versts south of the Syr Darya , with adjacent islands, and the island of Kugaral [4] .

She took part in the Aral expedition of 1848 - 1849 under the leadership of A. I. Butakov and ensign Pospelov [3] .

In the spring of 1848, the schooner again sailed to the northern shore of the sea, to study it [1] . Over the summer of this year, we managed to perform a flat-panel survey of the entire northern coast, from the mouths of the Syr Darya to Kumsuat [4] .

On June 12 ( 24 ), 1870 , the schooner was excluded from the lists of ships of the flotilla [2] .

Memory

  • The ship is periodically found in the works of Taras Shevchenko .
