The Institute of General and Emergency Surgery named after Vladimir Terentyevich Zaitsev is a research institute founded in 1930 in Kharkov [1] [2] [3] .

The Institute sets itself the task of solving the problems of emergency surgery and blood transfusion, healing wounds, organ and tissue transplants, and treating stomach and duodenal ulcers [3] .
Content
History
The institute was created under the name Ukrainian Institute of Blood Transfusion and Hematology in 1930 at the initiative of V. N. Shamov , who was its director until 1934 [1] [2] [3] .
In 1932 it was renamed the Ukrainian Institute of Blood Transfusion and Emergency Surgery [1] [2] [3] .
In 1936, A. L. Slobodsky became the director [1] [2] [3] .
From 1938 to 1939, a scheme for blood transfusion on the battlefield was developed at the institute [2] .
During the Great Patriotic War he was evacuated to Volgograd , and then to Saratov [2] [3] . From 1941 to 1943, the Institute worked as the main station for blood transfusion to provide blood to medical facilities of the fronts [1] [2] . From June 23, 1941 to May 18, 1945, 68 tons of blood were prepared and 250 thousand patients were operated on [2] [3] .
September 10, 1943 he returned to Kharkov, where from October 1943 he resumed his activities [2] .
In 1965, the Kharkov Research Institute of General and Emergency Surgery was named. The director was A. A. Shalimov [1] [2] [3] .
From 1974 to 1999, V. T. Zaitsev worked as a director [3] . He created a school for emergency surgeons and a school of surgical gastroenterology [1] [2] [3] .
Since 1999, V.V. Boyko has been working as a director [2] [3] .
Since 2000, it belongs to the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine [1] [2] .

- Department of clinical, instrumental and ultrasound diagnostics of the pathology of internal organs and the cardiovascular system.
- Laboratory of Pathomorphology and Experimental Surgery.
- Comprehensive programming department for the development of emergency surgery and intellectual property protection.
Additional Information
The Institute has postgraduate studies in the specialty "Surgery" [2] [3] . Over 5 years, 12 doctoral and 34 master's theses have been defended. 30 monographs and 40 textbooks have been published. Received 180 patents of Ukraine for the invention [2] . The institute graduated 45 doctors and 217 candidates of medical sciences [2] .
The Institute publishes the Kharkov School of Surgery journal [2] .
About 3 thousand operations are carried out annually on the basis of the institute [2] .
