Development and Impact

Arose from a tropical depression in the Northern Mariana Islands region of the Pacific Ocean on July 21. With the progress to the west-north-west, he gained the strength of a tropical storm, on July 23, received the name "Judy". In the evening of July 25, reached its maximum strength with a wind speed of 165 km / h. July 27 reached the shores of the Japanese island of Kyushu . July 28, attacked South Korea, and later on the territory of the USSR. July 29, weakened to a tropical depression, subsiding over the waters of the Sea of ​​Japan.

Torrential rains in Japan caused significant floods and landslides, caused the death of 11 people, destroyed 76 and damaged more than 10 thousand houses [1] , about four million people were left without electricity, train traffic was disrupted. The wind speed in Kagoshima reached 180 km / h. The total damage to the island of Kyushu amounted to 3.8 million dollars [2] .

In South Korea, during the passage of the typhoon in the lowlands, the population was evacuated. The wind speed on the coast reached 125 km / h. The typhoon caused flooding, leaving thousands of people without electricity. In Busan, people died as a result of a storm, landslides and the collapse of structures and floods [3] . In total, according to media reports , up to 24 people died in South Korea [4] .

In the USSR, a typhoon hit the Primorsky Territory. Torrential rains caused flooding, the death of at least 15 people, interrupted the railway connection along the Trans-Siberian Railway [5] [6] . Wind speed reached 166 km / h. 120 thousand hectares of land were flooded, including 109 settlements, about two thousand houses were damaged, 2678 bridges and 1340 km of roads were blurred, 70 km of power lines, 600 km of telephone networks were damaged [7] , 75 thousand cattle were drowned [8] .

Along with Melissa (1994), it belongs to the most powerful typhoons in the history of Primorsky Krai in terms of rainfall [9] .
