Shokalsky Glacier is a valley glacier in Kazakhstan , located in the basin of the Middle Talgar River . The total length of the glacier is 4.7 km, area - 16.8 km². The volume of ice is 0.96 km³. The firn line runs at an altitude of 3900 m. 5 chambers of the Shokalsky glacier are formed by spurs with peaks of the same name: the peak of Chokan Valikhanov, Aktau and Issyktenhochu. The latter shares the glaciers Bogatyr , Korzhenevsky and Shokalsky. The Shokalsky Glacier is the main glaciation area of the Zailiysky Alatau ridge. [1] The glacier was first investigated in 1910. Since 1962, the Institute of Geography of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan has been conducting systematic regime observations of the glacier. Named in honor of Shokalsky Julius Mikhailovich , Soviet oceanographer and cartographer.
