Biography
Grandfather I.V. Methodin Grigory Ivanovich Methodin was a well-known Russian industrialist, founder of the settlement of Gorbatka (now the center of the Selivanovsky district of the Vladimir region).
In 1927 he graduated from the Moscow State Conservatory as a musicologist and theoretician in the class of G.E. Konyusa . He studied harmony, polyphony and composition under the guidance of R.M. Glier , puffer and instrumentation - at S.N. Vasilenko . In 1935 he defended his thesis on harmony N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov [1] .
The teaching career and scientific activity of I.V.Sposobin is mainly connected with the Moscow Conservatory, where he taught (since 1924) musical and theoretical disciplines (he led harmony since 1933). From 1939 - professor of the conservatory, in 1943-48 - head of the department of music theory, in 1942-47 - dean of the theoretical and composer faculty. From 1924 until the end of his life he also taught at the Music College at the Moscow Conservatory . Among the students of Methodin - G.G. Galynin , I.A. Barsova , D.A. Blum , V.P. Fraenov , E.M. Fraenova , Yu.N. Kholopov , Yu.S. Saulsky , A.P. Agazhanov, V.O. Berkov, T.F. Muller and many others.
Methodin had a great sense of humor. He is credited with the phrase, legendary in the circles of musicians, said at the funeral of B. V. Asafiev : “So we did not know what intonation is ” [2] .
He was buried at Vvedensky cemetery (plot number 6).
Teaching
The most significant works of Methodin in harmony and form . Methodin is the lead author of the textbook “The Brigade of the Historical and Theoretical Department of the MGK ” (which also included the teachers of the MGK I. Dubovsky, S. Evseev and V. Sokolov) “Practical Harmony Course”, published in 1934 [3] . From this book in 1937-38. the fundamental “Textbook of Harmony” grew up in two parts, popularly nicknamed the “brigade”, which was regularly reprinted until the late 1990s. The textbook on the elementary theory of music by Methodin, first published in 1951 (also reprinted several times), remains popular.
Methodin considered harmony in its historical evolution (which was not in Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov harmony textbooks), which led from the Baroque era [4] . Studying tonality , he singled out central and local functions , introduced the terms “subsystem” (subsystem of the tonal fret), “ dominant fret ” (a special fret distinguished by the duality of the main structure), “ prokofievskaya dominant ” and others. The way to the idea of “national characterization” of harmony also belongs to Methodin (which was considered in connection with the "national" features of melodics) and the concept of "harmony of the Russian school."
The book about the form that Method wrote in the difficult years of the war (the introduction is dated April 1945), N.Ya. Myaskovsky described it as "essentially the first independent textbook of musical forms in terms of the scope of the question in Russian."

- ↑ The leading position of Methodin in the “brigade” is indirectly evidenced by the fact that his name is mentioned first in the list of authors, against the observance of the alphabetical order.
- ↑ Sound-altitude systems in the music of previous eras (for example, modal harmony in the works of the great Dutch polyphonists ) Methodin, according to the scientific tradition that dominated in Soviet times, considered the major-minor tonal music to be not fully formed, and the quinto-octave finalis ( concord ) in them was “tonic without thirds.
