Since 1801 he studied at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Stockholm under the guidance of Professor Johan Serge , who instilled in him an interest in ancient art and natural grace.
Along with classes at the Academy, he studied history, archeology and anatomy. After graduating from the Academy, he worked for many years in Stockholm.
In 1818, he went to Paris as a pensioner of the Swedish government, where he spent about two years and studied under the guidance of, first, Pierre-Narcissus Guerin , an artist who recognized only ancient beauty, and later practiced sculpture technique with Francois Joseph Bosio .
In 1820, Vogelsberg realized the dream of his life and visited Rome, where he spent most of his remaining life.
The sculptor died in Trieste.
