History
Ukrainian "Falcon" was founded on February 11, 1894 in Lviv . Prior to this, since 1867, the Polish gymnastic society "Sokół" ( Polish. Polskie Towarzystwo Gimnastyczne "Sokół" ) was operating in the city, which included some Ukrainians. The charter of the Falcon was based on the charter of the Czech Falcon , the original territory of the Ukrainian Falcon was Galicia and Bukovina . The first chairman is Vasily Nagorny (until 1900), the commissar is Vladimir Lavrovsky (both pioneers of the Sokol movement ).
The goal of Sokol society is to foster unity, popular strength and a sense of honor in the Ukrainian people through physical education, as well as endurance training, mobility, discipline, teamwork.
On the initiative of A. Budzinovsky, the Falcon, in addition to sports and competitions, paid attention to fire fighting (until 1932), travel, as well as fencing, cycling, and since 1912, to shooting exercises. A lot of effort for the development of the Falcon was made by I. Bobersky, since 1901 - the head of the Sokol teacher's club, 1908 - 14 goals. "Falcon".
At the same time, Sokol spread its activities throughout Galicia: mainly Sokol mobile branches (the first was founded in 1902 in Stanislav) arose in the cities, sports and fire branches (also called "nests") in the villages under the names "Sich" or " Falcon ”(the choice of name was left to the founders of the branches).
The growth in the number of “Falcons” and “Sichs”, united in the central “Falcon-Father” (since 1909 the name of the central branch in Lviv), was significant:
- 1902 - 6
- 1903 - 70
- 1905-243
- 1907–373
- 1910-601
- 1914–974
The largest network was in Lviv Uyezd and Podillia, the smallest - on the Corner and Bukovina (2 cells), on which the Sech organization had previously been distributed, the number of members was approx. 33000.
An application to the activities of the Falcon was training in singing, music, amateur theater, etc. Since 1912, the Falcon Father has been organized by the Streletsky Sokolsky Kuren (organizer S. Goruk), therefore the name is found - the sports and shooting society “Falcon”.
Like the Sich organization, Sokol-Father organized mass actions: district (in Stryi 1906, Ternopol 1910) and regional (in Lviv - 1911, 1914).
The Shevchenko rally took place on Sokol-Father’s Square - in the Ukrainian City on June 28, 1914 - and was a mass manifestation of approx. 12,000 members of the Falcon, the Ukrainian Sich Union, Plast and sports squads. And in 1912, the Ukrainian Sokol participated in the All-Slav Sokol Congress in Prague on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Czech Sokol.
In addition to those already mentioned, among the outstanding figures of the Falcon until 1914 were: K. Gutkovsky, Yu. Vintskovsky (chairman of the photographic and bicycle section), Y. Vintskovsky (pseudo. Yaroslavenko, composer of falcon songs and the hymn “Falcons, Falcons, stand in the ranks” "), M. Voloshin, I. Domanik, L. Lepky, R. Digdalevich, Tsipanovsky and others.
On the Dnieper there were several (the largest - in Kiev) cells of the Russian "Falcon", in which there were also Ukrainians.
