History
Exploration of the Oyu-Tolgoi Field
In 2001, the Canadian company Ivanhoe Mines discovered a gold mine in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia in the area known as Oyu Tolgoi (translated from Mongolian - Turquoise Hill) [3] , where copper was smelted in the time of Genghis Khan . [4] By 2003, there were 18 exploratory drilling rigs employing about 200 people, and Oyu Tolgoi had become a major global exploration project. [3] In January 2013, Oyu Tolgoi began to produce concentrate from the mine. [five]
Airport History
The old airport terminal was built in the 2000s. In 2004, the airport was named Oyut. The runway was unreinforced. In 2007, he began to accept passenger flights. The new airport was built in 2012. It opened on February 10, 2013.
Basic Information
Description
Hanbumbat Airport is located in the south of the Gobi Desert of Mongolia, 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of the Mongolian border with China. [4] The mine contains (as of 2010) an estimated 79 billion pounds (35.833 million tons) of copper and 45 million ounces (1.275 billion grams) of gold. [6] Production was launched in 2013 and is expected to reach full capacity in 2018. During the expected mine life (45 years), Oyu Tolgoi plans to produce 450,000 tons (500,000 short tons) of copper per year, for an amount equal to 3% of world production. Oy Tolgoi will also produce 330,000 ounces of gold per year. [7] [8] Now more than 14,000 people work at the mine, of which only 3,000 - 4,000 are Mongols, [9] so it was necessary to build an airport.
