Emblem Description

The Valdai city settlement uses the coat of arms of the city of Valdai as an official symbol, reflecting historical and local traditions, granted by the Highest Imperial Decree of April 2, 1772 to the city of Valdai.

The coat of arms used by the Valdai city settlement as an official symbol is a shield divided in two by a perpendicular line. In the geometric center of the right half of the shield is an image of the Imperial gold crown against the background of ermine fur.

On the left silver field in the lower half of the shield is an image of a green mountain, symbolizing the mountainous location of Valdai.

Symbolism Description and Coat of Arms History

The historical coat of arms of Valdai was highly approved on April 2, 1772 by Empress Catherine II, along with other emblems of the cities of the Novgorod province . (PSZRI, 1772, Law No. 13780). [2] [3]

The coat of arms of Valdai was compiled by the heraldmeister Prince M. M. Shcherbatov , and depicted by the famous heraldic artist Butkovsky Artemy Nikolaevich. [four]

In the 19th century, during the Köhne heraldic reform, a project was developed for a new coat of arms of the county town of Valdai, Novgorod province (not officially approved): In the ermine field, there is a green mountain, accompanied by a golden crown at the head. March 25, 1977 by the decision of the Executive Committee of the Valdai City Council of Workers' Deputies No. 66, the Soviet version of the coat of arms of Valdai was approved. The author is Yuri Ivanovich Semenov.

The emblem had the following description: “The emblem is divided into 2 halves: left and right. The left side (from the viewer): 1770 - the year of the construction of Valdai among other Russian cities by decree of Empress Catherine. The bell is a symbol of the old Valdai, famous for its forging and foundry, famous throughout the whole of Russia for its bells. The mountain is a symbol of the Valdai Upland . Right side (from the viewer): Red background and five-pointed star - a symbol of the Soviet state, Soviet power. The wind rose and tent are a symbol of tourists and travelers. On December 23, 1996, the historical coat of arms of Valdai in 1772 was approved by the official symbol of the city and Valdai district. [five]

On January 26, 2007, by the decision of the Council of Deputies of the Valdai City Settlement, the historical coat of arms of Valdai in 1772 was restored and approved as an official symbol of the Valdai city set. Until 2011, the historical coat of arms of Valdai in 1772 was also the official coat of arms of the Valdai District.

On September 28, 2011 by Decision No. 70 of the Duma of the Valdai Municipal District “On the Approval of the Regulation on the Coat of Arms and Flag of the Valdai Municipal District”, the current coat of arms of the district was approved, which was created on the basis of the 19th-century Valdai coat of arms design.
