Pope, Maurice (linguist)

Maurice Wildon Montagu Pope Maurice Wildon Montague Pope (b. February 17, 1926 [1] ) is a South African and British linguist, one of the prominent researchers of Cretan writing .

He graduated from Cambridge. Since 1949, he was an assistant teacher at the Department of Classical Studies at Stellenbosch University , since 1952 he was a teacher, and since 1957 he was a professor.

Since 1957, succeeded Professor George P. Gould, also a Cambridge graduate, co-authored by Pope previously published studies of Linear A , as head of the Department of Classical Studies.

The hero of the book by J. M. Coetzee “Youth” describes the faculty of classics of the University of Cape Town as follows:

“In his opinion, Greek and pure mathematics are the noblest of the subjects taught at the university. He reverently admires Greek lecturers whose courses are not available to him: the papyrologist Anton Paap, Sophocles translator Maurice Pope, and Heraclitus commentator Moritz Kheemstra. In addition to linguistics, Pope was actively interested in archeology, often went on archaeological expeditions, in 1954 he took part in an underwater expedition of the Athenian archaeological school near Chios [2] .

In the 1960s - Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Cape Town .

In August 1968, he resigned as dean and resigned from the university in protest against the government’s decision to withdraw the offer to take one of the university posts to a black African. [3] After that he worked at Oxford University (Great Britain), was considered one of the leading text experts Minoan Crete and the history of writing.

In the 1980s together with J. Reason compiled and issued the corpus of inscriptions of Linear letter A. The corps has withstood several reprints.

Married to Johanna Garle, 5 sons and one daughter were born in marriage [4] .
