Biography

Petr Kostyuchenko was born on February 9, 1917 in the village of Voroshilovka (now Volno- Volnakhsky District, Donetsk Region of Ukraine ). After finishing eight classes of school, he worked as a mechanic at the Mariupol Ship Repair Plant. In 1938, Kostyuchenko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1940, he graduated from political training courses. From October 1941 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. Took part in battles on the South , North Caucasus , 3rd and 4th Ukrainian, 1st Belorussian fronts. By April 1945, Major Piotr Kostyuchenko commanded a battalion of the 1052nd rifle regiment of the 301st rifle division of the 5th shock army of the 1st Belorussian Front. Distinguished during battles in Germany [1] .

On April 14, 1945, the Kostyuchenko battalion participated in the battles to the northeast of Seelow . Raising his fighters to the attack, Kostyuchenko with them successfully broke through the German defenses, destroying a total of about 400 soldiers and officers of the enemy, 210 more captured. Over the next day, continuously advancing, the battalion advanced 12 kilometers forward. On April 16, 1945, at the approaches to the city, Guzov Kostyuchenko again raised his battalion to the attack, and was killed in battle. He was buried in the city of Kostrzyn nad Odr [[1] .

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of May 31, 1945, Major Pyotr Kostyuchenko was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for the “exemplary performance of the combat tasks of the command on the front against the German aggressors and the courage and heroism shown.” He was also awarded the Order of Lenin , the Red Banner , World War 1 and 2 degrees, the Red Star , a number of medals [1] .
