Biography

Fedor Kostyuk was born on May 25, 1915 in the village of Mogilnoye (now - the Gayvoronsky district of the Kirovograd region of Ukraine ). After graduating from a pedagogical college, he worked as a teacher at school. In 1940, Kostyuk was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since the beginning of World War II - on its fronts. In 1943 he graduated from the tank school with an accelerated course. By April 1945, Senior Lieutenant Fedor Kostyuk commanded a tank company of the 65th Panzer Brigade of the 11th Panzer Corps of the 1st Guards Panzer Army of the 1st Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the battles at the Kyustrinsky bridgehead [1] .

On April 16 - 18, 1945, the company of Kostyuk broke through the German defenses and stormed the villages of Verbig and Guzov west of Zeelov . In battle, Kostyuk was injured, but continued to fight [1] . Here is how the commander of the 11th Panzer Corps Yushchuk I. I. describes the heroic deed of the Hero in his book “The Eleventh Panzer Corps in battles for the Homeland”

In the area northwest of Verbig, the brigade was counterattacked by 42 tanks and assault guns with the support of enemy infantry from the west and southwest. Tankers of the 65th Tank Brigade, with the support of heavy tanks of the 50th Guards Heavy Tank Regiment, successfully repelled the Nazi attack. In this battle, the crews of the heavy tank company of the Guard Captain V. A. Romanov [2] of the 50th Guards Heavy Tank Regiment distinguished themselves. They knocked out three enemy tanks and destroyed a lot of manpower. The tank company of the tank brigade under the command of senior lieutenant F.S. Kostyuk and the tank platoon of the same company under the command of lieutenant I.A. Gnilomedov showed themselves especially well in repelling the counterattack. They destroyed 17 tanks and self-propelled guns of the Nazis . For courage and heroism shown during the counterattack of enemy tanks, the senior lieutenant Kostyuk and the platoon commander, Lieutenant Gnilomedyov received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
