Biography
Before the war, Elena studied at a secondary school in the city of Pinsk , two years later, her family was sent to Krasnoyarsk to a labor camp. In 1943, Elena, thanks to an amnesty for Polish citizens deported to Siberia, joined the Polish Army, the 1st Infantry Division, where she was appointed deputy political commander of the 1st Women's Battalion named after Emilia Plater. She graduated from officer courses in Ryazan, rose to the rank of corooner and was appointed platoon commander of the 3rd Pomeranian Infantry Division. During the battles for Warsaw, she was seriously injured and soon died.
After the war, the leadership of the Polish People’s Republic elevated Elena to the rank of a national heroine who fought for a free, socialist Poland (as did Lucina Hertz ). On October 24, 1975, in the Targuvek district, one of the streets was renamed in honor of Elena Yunkevich.
