Hachijoujima ( 八丈 島 ) is a Japanese volcanic island in the Philippine Sea . [1] The island lies 287 kilometers south of Tokyo's special areas and belongs to the Izu archipelago , which is managed by the Tokyo administration. Hachijoujima is also part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Wildlife Refuge.
