Cathedral City - San Francisco . Cathedral - Trinity (San Francisco).
History
The first Orthodox parish in the diocese was founded in 1825 in Fort Ross . In 1857, a parish was established in San Francisco.
In 1872-1905, San Francisco was the cathedral city of the Aleutian Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church .
After the division of the North American diocese into three deaneries, "Deanery of the Western States" became the progenitor of the current Diocese of the West. In the 1920s, Greek parishes separated, first moving to the Church of Greece , then to the Church of Constantinople . In 1924, Vicarism of the West was created.
In 1927, the Russian "North American Metropolis" separated from the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia . Since then, the San Francisco Chair, which probably became independent in the 1930s, has invariably existed as part of the isolated American Metropolitanate, and then the Orthodox Church in America that inherited it.
In 1941, the first nunnery was founded in California by nuns who resettled from China.
In November 1946, the North American Metropolitanate separated from the Synod of Bishops of the ROCOR, many clergy and laity did not accept this, as a result of which there were parallel dioceses: one subordinate to the ROCOR and the other in the North American Metropolis.
In 1957, the first diocesan assembly took place, after which the diocese began an active mission. In the 1960s, the parishes of the diocese began to switch to English in worship and adopt the New Julian calendar .
In 1994, a separate deanery (deanery) was created for missionary parishes.
