Legislative Election in Turkmenistan (2013)

The parliamentary elections to the Mejlis ( Parliament of Turkmenistan ) were held on December 15, 2013 [1] [2] . In total, 283 [3] candidates for 125 seats in parliament [4] were registered. In addition to the Democratic Party , the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan [5] [6] [7] , as well as public associations of Turkmenistan and meetings of initiative groups of citizens living in the respective districts [3] took part in the elections for the first time. 2446 polling stations were formed, and 33 polling stations were established abroad at the diplomatic missions of Turkmenistan . The previous parliamentary elections were held on December 14, 2008 . The turnout was more than 91.30% [8] [9] ; in total, the Central Election Commission of Turkmenistan registered 3 million 63 thousand voters.

Chronicle

The election campaign started on October 5. Nomination of candidates lasted from October 16 to November 14. Candidates were registered from October 26 to November 20. On December 5, early voting began on the election of deputies of the Mejlis for those who, for one reason or another, could not come to their polling station on December 15 and vote [10] .

December 15 at 15:00 Ashgabat time, the average voter turnout in the country was 78.57%, the elections were declared valid [11] .

Evaluation of elections and their preparation

The CIS mission in the person of its head, Sergei Lebedev, reported that the elections “were in accordance with generally recognized democratic standards, were open, vowel and ensured the free expression of the will of the country's citizens” [12] .
