Biography

Born in Nizhny Novgorod in the family of a tradesman.

He studied at the Nizhny Novgorod noble institute (1869-1877), then - at the Petrovsky Agricultural and Forestry Academy (1877-1881). After graduating from the forest department, he was left as an assistant to Professor M.K. Tursky , at the Department of Forestry. At this time, his first independent work was published, “On the Effect of Temperature on the Germination of Seeds of Some Coniferous Tree Species” (Bulletin of the Petrovsky Agricultural and Forest Academy, 1884); with his participation, the book "Key to wood, branches and seeds" [1] was published.

In 1886-1888 he trained abroad: he listened to lectures by K. Geier and R. Gartig in Germany, L. Bopp in France, studied the formulation of the case in more than 30 of the best forestries in Germany and France [2] . Due to the closure of the forest branch of the Petrovsky Academy, L. I. Yashnov, having returned to Russia, was forced to switch to practical work: after a business trip to the Kherson province, he joined the Kiev branch office as a forestry scientist, then moved to St. Petersburg, to the General Directorate of Destinies .

Work in the management of inheritances gave L.I. Yashnov the opportunity to deeply explore the forests of the North, Crimea, Belarus, Belovezhskaya Pushcha, Volga. His assessment of the drying of spruce forests and forestry in the Vologda and Arkhangelsk provinces in 1901 was the basis for one of the special Meetings of forestry technicians in 1902 at the Main Directorate of Departments.

From 1901 to 1904, L. I. Yashnov was the editor of the Forest Journal .

L. I. Yashnov headed the Forest Society of Russia.

In the period 1917-1921, Yashnov worked as the head of the Simbirsky Specific District.

In 1921, Yashnov was invited to work at the Goretsky Agricultural Institute at the Department of General Forestry. In 1925, he joined the newly opened Kazan Institute of Agriculture and Forestry; here he taught a course in dendrology, forestry and general forestry. He was twice dean, vice-rector for academic affairs, head of educational forestry (there were three of them). In Kazan, he organized the Kazan Forest Society, which was chaired by several years.

After the transfer of the forest faculty in 1932 from Kazan to Yoshkar-Ola, he continued to work at the Volga Forestry Institute .

Yashnov proved the beneficial effect of forest strips and forests in the steppe and forest-steppe on crop yields, increase soil fertility, their water conservation value; he owns the thesis: "He who does not believe in the water conservation role of the forest is a non-forest grower." Highly appreciated Yashnova G. F. Morozov [3] .
