Biography
The son of an organist musician. In 1875 he graduated from the gymnasium in Tarnuv . Then he studied Slavic philology at the University of Vienna . Since 1876, he was a student at the Jagiellonian University , after graduating in 1878, he worked as a teacher of Polish, Latin, Greek and German in elementary schools in Nowy Sacz and Krakow .
In 1898-1899 he lived in Prague, where under the guidance of prof. Jan Gebauer defended his doctoral dissertation on the influence of the Slovak language on Polish dialects. In 1902-1908 He worked as the director of the gymnasium in Tarnow , in September 1908 he returned to Krakow and took the post of director of the secondary school, where he worked until his retirement in 1924.
In the years 1884-1901. - An active member of the Anthropological Commission of the Academy of Knowledge in Krakow, two terms was secretary of the ethnographic department. Founder and long-term editor of the monthly journal Poradnik Językowy, author of linguistic and ethnographic works (including a dictionary of synonyms), as well as Polish grammar for secondary schools and thesaurus .
In 1903-1909 was co-editor of the publication "Ubiory ludu polskiego". In 1913-1916 - the first chief editor of the publication "Język Polski" ("Polish language"), later was the editor and publisher of "Poradnika Językowego".
He died in Krakow. He was buried at Rakovitsky cemetery .
