The offspring of Aberhard von Shanz , a native of the German state of Hesse , in the XVI century, passed to the service of the Swedish king. Von Shantsy occupied significant positions at the Swedish royal court, but by the end of the 18th century the family was poorer, and its representatives were forced to earn a living by engaging in more prosaic affairs.
The genus was entered in the matriculum of the Knight's House of the Grand Duchy of Finland on 26.1.1818 under No. 95.
