Karel Purkyně [5] (March 15, 1834, Wroclaw - April 5, 1868, Prague ) is a Czech artist, one of the most famous proponents of realism in Czech art in the second half of the 19th century. He was the son of physiologist and anatomist Jan Evangelist Purkine . Interest in art appeared in his youth. Purkin was influenced by Baroque artists Karel Shkreta and Peter Brandl , as well as paintings by the Dutch Golden Age . He spent a year in Munich studying with Johann Baptist Berdella before traveling to Paris, where he worked with Tom Couture , where he copied paintings by old masters and encountered the work of contemporary French artists. He was particularly struck by the work of Gustave Courbet . Upon his return to Prague, Purkine became known primarily as a portrait painter, although several works were performed in other genres. He also made a name for himself as an organizer of artistic events and as an art critic.
