Biography

In 1780, Augustine Gruber joined the monastic order of the Augustinians , from which he left in 1782 to study at the Vienna Seminary. On November 2, 1788, he was ordained deacon and on November 9, 1788, into priests . Since 1806 he was chancellor of the Vienna Archdiocese. In 1813, Augustine Gruber defended the degree of Doctor of Theology.

On June 25, 1815, the Austrian authorities appointed Augustine Gruber to the department of Ljubljana. On July 22, 1816, Pope Pius VII approved the appointment of Augustine Gruber. On August 8, 1816, Augustine Gruber was ordained bishop by the Vienna Archbishop Sigismund Anton von Hochenwart SJ [2] , accompanied by Bishop Sankt Pölten Johann Nepomuk von Dankesreiter and Bishop Bacau Giuseppe Bonaventure Bera.

February 17, 1823 was appointed Archbishop of Salzburg.

Augustine Gruber wrote several religious books, among which the most famous is Katechetische Vorlesungen ueber des hl. Augustinus Buch: Von der Unterweisung der Unwissenden in der Religion ” (Salzburg 1830).

He died on June 28, 1835 in Salzburg and was buried in the Salzburg Cathedral .
