Biography

Vasily Vasilievich Pyryaev was born in 1915 in Sokolskaya Sloboda , a suburb of the county town of Pereslavl-Zalessky, Vladimir province of the Russian Empire (now the village of the same name in the Pereslavl-Zalessky city district of the Yaroslavl region of the Russian Federation ) in the family of weaver workers Vasily Vasilyevich and Tatyana Kuzminichy. Russian He graduated from seven classes of secondary school No. 1 named after V.I. Lenin of the city of Pereslavl-Zalessky and the school of factory apprenticeship at the weaving factory "Red Echo" [1] . He began his career as a repairman in the spinning mill of the factory in 1931.

In the ranks of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army V.V. Pyryaev was called up by the Pereslavl regional military registration and enlistment office of the Yaroslavl region in May 1937. He served in the artillery unit of the Leningrad Military District . At the end of military service, he remained at the emergency service. He took part in the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940. Demobilized as a junior commander of the platoon, Vasily Vasilievich returned to Pereyaslavl-Zalessky. Before the start of World War II, he worked at the Red Echo factory as an assistant to the master.

Again V.V. Pyryaev was drafted into the Red Army in September 1941. In battles with the Nazi invaders, Senior Sergeant V.V. Pyryaev from the beginning of October 1941 on the Southern Front as an assistant commander of an intelligence platoon of the 530th artillery regiment of the 18th Army . The first battle took place near the village of Mezhirichi near the city of Pavlograd, Dnipropetrovsk region of the Ukrainian SSR , where the 530th artillery regiment defended an anti-tank ditch, preventing the enemy from overcoming this powerful fortification. On October 3, 1941, senior sergeant Pyryaev, for three hours, with fire from a light machine gun restrained the onslaught of the German infantry, trying to cross the moat and surround the position of one of the batteries of the regiment, until it was wounded in the arm. After returning to duty, Vasily Vasilievich participated in the defense of Donbass . In the battles he was seriously wounded and evacuated to the hospital.

After the cure, V.V. Pyryaev received the rank of foreman and was appointed to the post of commander of the artillery gun of the battery of 45-mm guns of the 404th Infantry Regiment of the 176th Infantry Division of the Southern Front. He participated in battles on the German defense line Mius Front . After the defeat of the troops of the Southwestern Front in the Kharkov operation, units of the 176th Infantry Division as part of the 12th Army retreated to the North Caucasus with battles. In September 1942, the division became part of the 9th Army of the Northern Group of Forces of the Transcaucasian Front and took part in the Battle of the Caucasus . By this time, the experienced junior commander foreman V.V. Pyryaev had already commanded a fire platoon of his battery. Vasily Vasilyevich skillfully led the platoon during the Mozdok-Malgobek defensive operation in the battles for Mozdok and Malgobek . His soldiers distinguished themselves during the counterattack of the division in the area of the village of Krasnaya Gorka on September 14, 1942. Supporting the offensive of the regiment’s rifle units, the Pyryaev platoon gunners destroyed 10 enemy firing points, a mortar battery with a servant, and up to 100 Wehrmacht troops. Three artillery pieces were captured by platoon soldiers as trophies. A few days later, when repulsing the advance of the Nazi troops, Vasily Vasilievich was again wounded and ended up in a hospital bed. Doctors quickly put him on his feet, but not yet fully recovered from the wound, the fighter was sent to junior lieutenants for short-term army courses. In December 1942, V.V. Pyryaev was appointed to the 98th Guards Artillery Regiment of the 11th Guards Rifle Corps of the 9th Army and took command of the 6th Battery of the 1st Division fire platoon. In this position, Vasily Vasilievich participated in the liberation of the North Caucasus from Nazi troops during the counterattack of front troops in the Nalchik direction and during the North Caucasus offensive operation . In the spring of 1943, he was transferred to the post of platoon commander of the 3rd Battery of the 1st Division. During the fierce May battles on the Blue Line of Guards, the second lieutenant V.V. Pyryaev repeatedly advanced to the front line, and taking a favorable observation position, identified enemy firing points and adjusted the fire of his battery. So, on May 27, 1943, during an assault on a height of 121.4 north-west of the Crimean village, he was in combat infantry formations and under constant bombardment of the enemy and under constant bombardment from the air controlled battery fire, as a result of which 3 enemy firing points were destroyed by artillery fire and bunker destroyed. This made it possible for rifle units to move forward and take possession of the German trenches. In total, during the battles from May 1 to May 31, 1943, junior lieutenant V.V. Pyryaev, during reconnaissance of the front line of the enemy’s defense, discovered 6 bunkers, 4 artillery batteries and 5 machine-gun points, some of which were destroyed by artillery fire. The Soviet troops managed to break through the deeply echeloned and greatly fortified enemy defenses of Gotenkopf only in the autumn of 1943 during the Novorossiysk-Taman operation . After the liberation of the Taman Peninsula, the North Caucasian Front was transformed into a Separate Primorye Army , as part of which the 98th Guards Corps Artillery Regiment began preparations for landing on the Kerch Peninsula . V.V. Pyryaev, who became a lieutenant of the Guard by the fall of 1943, distinguished himself during the Kerch-Eltigen landing operation .

On the night of November 3, 1943, Lieutenant VV Pyryaev, as part of an assault landing force, crossed the Strait of Kerch , and was the first to land on the coast of the Kerch Peninsula near the village of Dangerous [2] , and he dragged the rest of the fighters by example. With a swift throw, the paratroopers broke into the coastal height of 102.0 and knocked out the enemy from there. Guard Lieutenant V.V. Pyryaev, with a group of Soviet soldiers and officers, was among the first to climb to the top and hoisted a red flag on it. In an effort to regain lost ground, the enemy during November 4 launched two violent counterattacks on the position of the paratroopers. Reflecting the enemy’s counterattacks with personal weapons, the guards, Lieutenant Pyryaev, at the same time, called and adjusted artillery fire on the radio. As a result of the skillful actions of Vasily Vasilyevich, artillery fire destroyed 2 machine-gun points, one gun and up to hundreds of enemy soldiers, which allowed the paratroopers to maintain their height. During subsequent battles for the retention and expansion of the bridgehead on the Kerch Peninsula of Guard, Lieutenant V.V. Pyryaev performed the work of an artillery fire spotter and a front-line reconnaissance. Having organized constant monitoring of the enemy, Vasily Vasilievich promptly informed the corps headquarters about the enemy’s movements, identified his weapons and places of concentration of troops and equipment, skillfully controlled artillery fire for identified targets, which caused great damage to the enemy and repeatedly frustrated his plans. On November 8, 1943, the enemy, by force before the infantry battalion, with the support of 10 tanks, launched a major attack on the position of the paratroopers. During the German attack, V.V. Pyryaev with two fighters was at the forward observation post, designated as a mound + 5.0. When the lead tank with German machine gunners approached 150 meters, Vasily Vasilyevich caused artillery fire on himself. Having fallen under powerful artillery fire, the enemy fled in a panic, leaving up to 20 killed soldiers on a hillside. The height of the mound +5.0 remained Soviet. November 21, 1943 commander of the 98th guards corps artillery regiment guard lieutenant colonelM.A. Pavlenko introduced the guard of lieutenant V.V. Pyryaev to the rank of Hero of the Soviet Union. The decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR was signed on May 16, 1944.

After the Kerch-Eltigen landing operation was completed, V.V. Pyryaev was appointed commander of the 3rd battery of the regiment. In private offensive operations to expand the bridgehead and during the offensive of the Separate Maritime Army troops that began on April 8, 1944, as part of the Crimean operation, the battery of Lieutenant Pyryaev’s guard, supporting the actions of rifle units, including the 32nd Guards Rifle Division , acted with high efficiency and repeatedly provided advancement of its infantry. During the breakthrough of the enemy’s defense near the village of Ak-Monay of the Leninsky district of the Crimean ASSR , Lieutenant Pyryaev was in the front units of the infantry with a walkie-talkie and, working directly on the front line, detected enemy firepower and controlled the fire of the battery. Pyryaev's gunners contributed to the breakthrough of the German defense by rifle units and their mastery of the stronghold of the German defense by the village of Ak-Monay. During the battles for the liberation of the Crimean peninsula , the 3rd battery of Lieutenant Pyryaev’s guard also caused great damage to the enemy. In total, from December 1, 1943 to April 28, 1944, she destroyed 7 artillery, 3 easel and 5 light machine guns, 1 bunker, crushed 2 mortar batteries, 3 light and 7 machine guns, and exterminated more than 300 Wehrmacht soldiers and officers. During the liberation of Sevastopol, Vasily Vasilyevich replaced the outdated division commander and did an excellent job of his duties during the assault on Sapun Mountain . Soon after the publication of the decree on conferring the title of Hero of the Soviet Union to the officer, sergeant and rank and file of the Red Army, V.V. Pyryaev was summoned to Simferopol , where he was awarded solemn awards in a festive atmosphere. Together with them, Vasily Vasilievich received the extraordinary rank of captain's guard.

In August 1944, the 98th Guards Artillery Regiment, later renamed the 93rd Guards [3] , was transferred to the Carpathians as part of the 3rd Mountain Rifle Corps , where it was included in the 1st Guards Army of the newly formed 4th Ukrainian front, and since September took part in the East Carpathian operation . Having extensive experience in the fighting in the mountains of the Caucasus and Crimea , the regiment's gunners in the mountainous and forested areas of the Carpathian Mountains provided significant support to the advancing infantry, knocking the enemy down from the peaks, destroying his fire weapons and repelling counterattacks. Guard Captain V.V. Pyryaev with a small group of radio operators penetrated the rear of the enemy and, taking an advantageous observation position, adjusted the fire of his battery. Twice Vasily Vasilievich was surrounded. Once, for seven days, with a group of radio operators and scouts, he had to repulse the enemy’s attacks at an altitude of 711.0. The second time he managed to break out of the encirclement, causing the division to fire at the enemy who was seizing. On October 12–13, 1944, the regiment fought in the northern Carpathians not far from the Polish-Czechoslovak border south of the Solinka river valley. During the assault on the heights of 935 and 932 guards, Captain V.V. Pyryaev took the infantry behind him by personal example and, having mastered a height of 935, repelled three enemy counterattacks. Having occupied the observation post on the top of the mountain, he skillfully adjusted the fire of his battery, thereby contributing to the mastery of the neighboring height of 932.

On October 13, 1944, units of the 3rd Mountain Rifle Corps received the task of continuing the offensive towards the settlement of Zval . To effectively correct the artillery fire of the guard, Captain V.V. Pyryaev, with a group of two radio operators and two scouts, advanced to an area of altitude 756. At the mountain, the group encountered German machine gunners. In the ensuing battle of the guard, Captain Pyryaev killed five German soldiers, but he was mortally wounded. The soldiers carried him out of the battlefield, but at the command post of the regiment, Vasily Vasilyevich died. He was buried by V.V. Pyryaev in the village of Baligród of the Leskowsky District of the Subcarpathian Voivodeship of the Polish Republic .
