North Ronaldsay is the northernmost of the Orkney Islands at the northern tip of Scotland .

Etymology
The name of the island may have come from the Scandinavian -Rinansøy ( Rus. Rinansey ) and under this name is mentioned in the "Saga of Harald the Fair-haired" [1] .
Geography
It is located in the northeastern part of the Orkney Islands archipelago , northeast of the Sunday Island, separated from it by the North Ronaldsay Firth Strait. Fort Isle lies forty kilometers to the northeast.
It is washed from the southeast by the North Sea , from the northwest by the Atlantic Ocean .
The weather is very changeable. The relief is mostly flat, the soil is fertile and used in agriculture.
Fauna
The island is known for the short-tailed sheep breed North Ronaldsay , which lives on the shores of the island and feeds mainly on algae. A stone wall built around the entire perimeter [2] [3] separates the sheep from the central part of the island.
An ornithological observatory was built on the island to observe bird migration [4] .
Population
The main settlement of the island is the village of Hollandstown in the center of the island.
Economics
North Ronaldsay Airport is located in the western part of the island, Loganair has regular daily flights to Kirkwall and weekly flights to Idea and Papa Westray [5] [6] .
Orkney Ferries Ferries connect the island with Kirkwall. [7]
Originally a 21 meter Dennis Head Old Beacon lighthouse, built by engineer Thomas Smith in 1789 . The modern lighthouse, 42 meters high, is run by the Northern Lighthouse Board , automated in 1998 [8] .
Attractions
- Dennis Head Old Beacon - a lighthouse built in 1789. In 1971, the lighthouse and the caretaker's house were included in the list of architectural monuments of category “A” [9] .
- A stone fence along the coast of the island uses the dry masonry method, built in 1832 . In 1999, the fence was included in the list of architectural monuments of category “A” [10] .
