Partisanska bolnica Franja partisan hospital ( Slovenian. Partizanska bolnica Franja ) is a secret hospital of the Second World War in the village of Doleni Novaki near Cercno in western Slovenia . It was run by Slovenian partisans from December 1943 until the end of the war as part of widespread organized resistance to the fascist occupation forces. There, soldiers were treated there, both those who fought on the side of the Allied powers, and on the side of the “axis” countries . The occupation forces of the Wehrmacht made unsuccessful attempts to find a hospital, but they did not succeed. Now the hospital has been turned into a museum. It is protected by the state as a cultural monument of national importance.

Built in the difficult rough terrain of the Pasica gorge in western Slovenia by Slovenian partisans, the hospital began operating in December 1943 and was constantly improved until the end of the war in May 1945. The hospital was located in the very depths of German-occupied Europe, just a few hours from Austria and the central regions of the Third Reich . The entrance to the hospital was well hidden in the forest, it could only be reached using bridges. The bridges could be discreetly hidden if an enemy was operating nearby. In order to preserve the secrecy of the location of the hospital, the wounded were brought into it blindfolded. The hospital was also protected by minefields and machine gun nests. Since the hospital was located in a gorge and was camouflaged in a forest thicket, it was impossible to detect it with the help of military intelligence.
The founder of the hospital was Viktor Voychyak, but the hospital was named after its director and doctor, Frani Fighter Bidovets, [1] who began working there in February 1944. Among the doctors working there was an Italian Antonio Ciccarelli. [2] The hospital was well equipped for covert guerrilla operations and remained untouched until the end of the war. It was designed to treat 120 patients at a time, but often this number was significantly exceeded. Most of the patients were injured during the fighting against the Nazis, who could not go to a regular hospital due to imminent arrest. Among the patients there were many representatives of various nationalities, including one enemy German soldier who remained after recovery in the hospital as his staff.
The hospital worked until May 5, 1945 . It became part of the Cercno Museum in 1963 . In 1997, the American Aviation Veterans Association rewarded Frany's Hospital for saving and treating a downed American pilot Harold Adams.
In 2003, a stamp was issued by Slovenian mail in honor of the 60th anniversary of Frany's Hospital, which became the brand of the year in Slovenia. [3] Franz Guerrilla Hospital is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage List . [four]
On September 18, 2007, the hospital was severely damaged as a result of a flood following heavy rains. [5] It was reconstructed and completely restored by 2010 , and from then on it was reopened to visitors. [6]
