Biography
Simon Kosterin was born on November 25, 1924 in the village of Kosteryat (now - the Yaransky district of the Kirov region ). After elementary school, he worked on a collective farm . In August 1942, Kosterin was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. He graduated from sergeant school. Since May 1943 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He participated in the battles near Rzhev , the liberation of the Smolensk region . By July 1944, Senior Sergeant Semyon Kosterin commanded the guns of the 439th anti-tank artillery regiment of the 1st separate fighter-anti-tank brigade of the 1st Belorussian Front . Distinguished during the Belarusian operation [1] .
During the battles near Slutsk in early July 1944, the calculation of Kosterin destroyed 4 tanks and a large number of enemy soldiers and officers. Bypassing Baranavichy , he participated in the battles for Brest as part of a horse-mechanized group. In the area of the village of Vilyanovo , 22 kilometers east of the Polish city of Siemiatycze, Kosterin participated in repelling two German tank attacks. In that battle, his calculation destroyed 12 enemy tanks, but only one Kosterin remained in service. Alone, he knocked out another tank, and then with a bunch of grenades threw himself under the last enemy tank, destroying it at the cost of his life. He was buried in a mass grave near the village of Vilyanovo [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 25, 1944, for "exemplary execution of the combat missions of command on the front of the struggle against the German invaders and shown courage and heroism", Senior Sergeant Semyon Kosterin was posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union . He was also awarded the Order of Lenin and a medal. Forever enrolled in the lists of personnel of the military unit [1] .
A street in Yaransk was named in honor of Kosterin [1] .
