Story
This is Moscow. This is an arena. The ruthless labyrinth of courtyards from which not to get out. There are three of them: an Uzbek guy and two police cadets. They are victims, their fate is predetermined, there is no one to expect help from — people crave for bread and circuses.
About the film
| We often hear such stories about national conflicts, they tickle our nerves, but most often we are not witnesses or heroes of these stories, they occur somewhere far away from us. And our attitude towards these people does not change. But all these stories are about us. These heroes are in the arena in front of us. And the story turns out also about how the society watches all this, and rarely anyone, seeing such a situation, will report to the police, not to mention intervening and standing up.Edward Bordukov, scriptwriter and director [6] |
This is a tough, dramatic story. There are many profanities ... The story is about how two police officers, young cadets, are witnesses of how skinheads attack a guy of non-Russian nationality. So it turns out that the cadets also fall under the distribution and are forced to flee with this guy. In general, this is a story about the fact that there are skinheads and very few people love them, there are police officers who are not particularly respected either, and there is this non-Russian guy who personifies different nationalities, and society does not accept them either.
When “Arena” was watched by a director from the USA who is working in Russia now, he told me the following story. In one disadvantaged area of New York, a gang attacked a woman, 40 minutes they mocked her, raped, robbed and fled. And for all these 40 minutes from the neighboring houses no one called the police. This story received a great response, and a lot of questions were discussed: why didn’t anyone tell the police? That is, this phenomenon - indifference - is characteristic of any society. I also tried to tell about it. And the national question is only an excuse.

In 2012, the film "Arena", directed by Eduard Bordukov, became a member of the ShortFilmCorner program of the 66th Cannes Film Festival [5] [7] . One of the main roles in the film was performed by the famous young actor Azamat Nigmanov (Prize for the best male role at the 23rd Kinotavr festival for the film “The Convoy” , director Alexei Mizgirev ).

Edward Bordukov is not a debutant. He has already four films - “One”, “Crisis”, “Box”, and finally, “Arena”. He started out as an editor. Gradually, he mastered the profession of a screenwriter and director. By the way, Azamat is already an experienced artist, starring in almost two dozen paintings. But we remembered him, first of all, by the leading role in Alexey Mizgirev ’s film “ The Convoy ”, where he appeared unusually organic. Nigmans seem doomed to continue to play the role of all kinds of "guests of the capital" - Uzbeks, Turkmen, Tajiks: at the same time it resembles all Central Asian nationalities.
