This rodent was previously known only from one locality in Bavaria (Germany), which has since been built up. These rodents were not recorded after 1962, and the species was considered extinct. However, a population of this species was discovered in 2000 in North Tyrol (Austria). Their species status has been confirmed by genetic research. Further research is needed to determine the size and range of the population, as well as to clarify the status according to IUCN criteria.
