Offseason

On June 11, 2013, the former head coach of the Toronto Marlies Dallas Ikins was appointed the new head coach of Edmonton Oilers . [2] Eakins spent eight years in the Toronto system, two years as an assistant to head coach Paul Moris , and for the past four seasons he headed the farm club in the AHL .

On June 13, the Finnish striker Leo Komarov confirmed that he was returning to the KHL to Dynamo Moscow [3] . For “Toronto” he spent one season.

July 3, “Toronto” bought the last year of the contract defender Mike Komisarek [4] . On July 4, it became known that striker Mikhail Grabovsky was put up for draft rejection [5] . A day later, his contract was redeemed. Thus, the two possibilities of redeeming the contract without taking them into account in the payroll, which provided for a new agreement between the league and the players' union, were used in the first season of the two possible.

In the offseason, Los Angeles goalkeeper Jonathan Bernier was purchased [6] , Chicago puck was the winner of the Stanley Cup final, striker Dave Bolland [7] , and ex- New Jersey forward David was signed Clarkson [8] . New contracts with the club were concluded by first-center center Tyler Bozak [9] , lead defender Karl Gunnarsson [10] , and one of the best young players in the club’s system, Nazem Kadri . During training camps, the ex- Vancouver forward Mason Raymond joined the team [11] .

Regular Season

Forward David Clarkson was disqualified for the first 10 matches of the regular season for taking part in the mass brawl of hockey players of both teams during the pre-season match with Buffalo Sabers [12] .

At the very beginning of the season, Mark Fraser [13] , Tyler Bozak [14] and Nikolai Kulemin [15] were injured and were sent out for a long time. Already on November 3, Kulemin was removed from the list of injured players [16] , but on the same day in the game against Vancouver striker Dave Bolland was seriously injured. After a collision with the Canucks forward, Zach Cassian , Bolland was diagnosed with a rupture of ligaments on his left ankle [17] . In this regard, the team began to need a central striker; On November 7, 34-year-old Jerred Smithson signed a contract with Leafs before the end of the season. [18]

On November 15, forward Nazem Kadri was disqualified for three matches for attacking the Minnesota goalkeeper [19] Nicklas Backström , who was injured and was unable to continue the game [20] .

On November 17, Toronto exchanged with Anaheim Ducks : for two forwards - center of Peter Holland and right-wing extreme Brad, the Maple Leafs gave the defender Jesse Blacker and two picks at the 2014 draft (the 38th overall choice - defender Marcus Pettersson and 205th - right forward Onjay Kashe ) [21] .

In early December, Bozak received another injury, due to which he was forced to miss the rest of 2013 [22] [23] .

On January 1, 2014, as part of the NHL Winter Classic, the Toronto Maple Leafs met with the Detroit Red Wings at the Detroit Michigan Stadium . “Toronto” won 3–2 in a shootout, with Tyler Bozak only recovering from the injury, scoring a second goal and a winning shootout [24] .

Other

On November 15, Forbes magazine published a ranking of the most expensive NHL clubs. Toronto retained first place in this indicator, being estimated at 1.15 billion dollars. The five also included the New York Rangers (850 million), Montreal Canadiens (775 million), Vancouver Canucks (700 million) and Chicago Blackhawks (625 million) with an average club cost of 413 million [25] . In terms of profit for 2013, Toronto was also in first place with $ 48.7 million [26] .

On January 1, ahead of the NHL Winter Classic match, two matches of the Maple Leafs and Red Wings veterans took place in Detroit . Victory in both matches was celebrated by ex-Detroit players [27] .
