Wilhelm Adam Kirshenshtein (? —1705) - German architect of the Baroque era.
The first of the foreign architects who worked on the instructions of Peter. Came from Saxony in 1699. Even during the Azov campaign distinguished himself in the construction of fortifications. Then he was summoned to Petersburg in 1703 to participate in the construction of the fortress.
The earthen fortecia "St. Peter-Burkh" was laid on May 16 (27), 1703 . The general idea of the fortifications was formulated by Peter, familiar with the modern ideas of the construction of fortresses in Europe, including Germany. These ideas by that time were developed in the works of S. de Vauban . The fortress was built according to the bastion system with “great haste”. To accelerate the work, the construction of the bastions was led by the tsar himself, as well as by his close associates A. D. Menshikov , G. I. Golovkin , N. M. Zotov , Yu. Yu. Trubetskoy, and K. A. Naryshkin . [1] General construction supervision was carried out by the German Kirshenshteyn, to whom a plan version with two ravels and six bastions is attributed. Frenchman J. G. Lambert also participated in the development of the plan. The architect died on June 24, 1705. [2]
