Born in Arezzo ( Italy ), in a large family (he was the ninth child). His father, Cosimo Severi, committed suicide when Francesco was nine years old, and Cosimo's wife kept herself and her youngest children on a small pension. Francesco Severi managed to get a scholarship to study at the University of Turin , however, despite this, he had to conduct tutoring courses in order to earn a living. Initially, he entered an engineering course, but Corrado Segre convinced him to switch to a course in pure mathematics. Severi's doctoral dissertation is devoted to the problems of - an object whose foundations were laid by . After defending his doctoral degree, Severi worked for some time as an assistant at several universities, in 1904 he was appointed professor of projective and descriptive geometry , and in 1905 he moved to the University of Padua . Since 1922 - professor at the University of Rome . [1] Since 1924 - a foreign corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences . [2]

Severi's main works relate to the birational geometry of algebraic surfaces; his work on the theory of functions of several complex variables is also important. In particular, he proved and introduced the definition of algebraic cycles (later another definition of rational equivalence was given using a more rigorous language). In total, Severi is the author of more than 400 articles, including 34 books. [3]
