Biography

Born in Moscow on June 9 ( 21 ), 1824 . Father - Colonel Vasily Sergeyevich Tolstoy. Mother - Maria Nikolaevna (1804-1854), nee Larionova. Maria Nikolaevna was the teacher of the daughters of Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich .

In 1842 he graduated from the Imperial Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum (issue XII). He served in the Chancellery of the War Ministry , the Ministry of the Imperial Court (since 1846 - secretary to the director of the Botanical Garden ) and the Ministry of the Interior (secretary of foreign correspondence of the Department of General Affairs).

From July 6, 1856, he was an official of special assignments under the State Comptroller and on April 19, 1857 left the sickness service and left to be treated with his wife Elena Vasilievna (nee Kal) in her homeland, in England .

Upon his return from England, on February 9, 1862, Yu. V. Tolstoy was appointed Tver Vice Governor ; April 4, 1865 was promoted to full state councilors . Since January 14, 1866 he took the post of comrade chief prosecutor of the Holy Synod. The Holy Synod, using Tolstoy's knowledge of Russian history, entrusted him with extracting information from the archives of Moscow stavropegic monasteries about their real estate.

April 16, 1872 was granted the rank of Privy Councilor .

On March 13, 1876, Tolstoy was elected a member of the Archaeographic Commission of the Ministry of Education , and on December 24, 1877 he was appointed senator.

Yu. V. Tolstoy gained fame mainly as a publisher of historical documents, for the most part equipped with extensive commentaries. Tolstoy's four-year stay in England gave him the opportunity to study the history of ancient relations between England and Russia according to the Royal Archives of London; other data on this subject were gathered by him in the Moscow main archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The fruit of these studies was a series of articles published in various Russian periodicals, and then the capital work “The First Forty Years of Relations between Russia and England. 1553-1593 ”(St. Petersburg: Printing house and chromolithography A. Tranchel, 1875), awarded the Academy of Sciences Uvarov Prize . Another work of Tolstoy was previously published: “Lists of bishops and bishops' departments of the All-Russian hierarchy since the establishment of the Most Holy Governing Synod (1721-1871)” (St. Petersburg, 1872).

He died on January 2, 1878 from consumption in San Remo , where he was under treatment since September 1877. He was buried on January 19, 1878 at the Novodevichy Cemetery in St. Petersburg [1] .
