Kosanovich, Sava (politician)

Sava Kosanovich ( Serb. Sava Kosanovi ; May 29, 1894 , Dies - September 14, 1956 , Belgrade ) - Yugoslav and Serbian politician, publicist, Yugoslav ambassador to the United States and Mexico. Nephew of Nikola Tesla , a famous Serbian scholar.

Biography

The early years

The son of Nikola and Maritsa Kosanovich (Maritsa is the younger sister of Nikola Tesla). He graduated from a gymnasium in Rijeka, and studied law at the University of Budapest. In 1926, he took the post of Secretary General of the center-left Independent Democratic Party, Svetozar Pribichevich . In 1927 he was elected to the People's Assembly of Yugoslavia, was also elected in 1935 and 1938. Since 1928, he fought in the Assembly against police terror and corruption. He wrote articles in the newspapers Volya ( Serb. Voљa ) and Novaya Speech ( Serb. Nova Rech ), in which he opposed chauvinism, corruption and dictatorship on January 6 .

Under the Law on the Protection of the State, Kosanovich was convicted and sent home. He continued his political career in the Peasant-Democratic Coalition (which included his NDP and the Croatian Peasant Party ), advocating the unity of the parties of civic initiative in the fight against dictatorship. During the work of Prime Minister Stoyadinovich, he managed to suffer from assassins. After the conclusion of the government of Tsvetkovich - Machek, the agreement on entry into the Anti-Comintern Pact, Kosanovich called on his political associates not to support the pact.

In World War II

March 27, 1941 in the government of Dushan Simovich Kosanovich took the post of Minister of Supply. After the occupation, he began a strong confrontation with his like-minded people and the government, as he supported the communist partisans Josip Broz Tito , and his former colleagues either propagated defeatist sentiments, or supported the Chetniks of Draze Mikhailovich .

From April 1942 to 1944, Kosanovich lived in exile in the United States, first as a member of the government, and then an opponent of the government in exile. On January 5, 1943, Sava met his dying uncle , promising him a meeting with Eleanor Roosevelt , but Tesla died the next day. In July 1944, Sava Kosanovich joined the coalition government of Josip Broz Tito and Ivan Shubashich and returned to his homeland in the liberated Vis, joining the partisan movement. In March 1945, he became Minister of Information in the Government of Josip Broz Tito.

After the war

After the war, already in 1946, Kosanovich was appointed ambassador to the United States, and then ambassador to Mexico. In 1949, he again became part of the government, and from 1953 to 1956 he held a position in the Union Executive Chamber. He was a member of the Presidium of the People's Assembly and the Presidium of the People's Front (later the Socialist Union). In 1946, he represented Yugoslavia at the signing of the Paris Peace Treaty , in 1947 he led the delegation of Yugoslavia at the UN session in New York. Through the efforts of Kosanovich, the Nikola Tesla Museum was created in Belgrade, where the personal belongings of the great scientist were transferred.

Sava Kosanovich died on September 14, 1956 in Belgrade . He was buried in the New Cemetery.
