Background and Release
For the first time, Perry began recording her fourth studio album in November 2012, stating that the recording was aimed at “dark” sounds. In 2013, the recording of the album continued, and in April, the singer announced that half of the album was already recorded. On August 9, the single was merged onto the Internet and Capitol Records urgently released the song into digital sales a few days before the official release.
On July 29, 2013, Perry announced that her fourth studio album, Prism, would be released on October 22, sending a big gold truck down the streets of Los Angeles with a release date and a name printed on the sides. [1] On August 2, she confirmed that the album's first and title single “Roar” would be released on August 12, however, on Saturday, August 10, [2] the song leaked onto the Internet, and later that day its official debut on the radio was made. This will be facilitated by the Clear Channel radio station, playing a song every hour [3] . Despite numerous rumors that the song will be released digitally, Perry announced on Twitter that the single's release remained the same day as originally planned, at midnight on August 12th [3] . The song was also accused of copyright infringement, compared to Sarah Barellis’s song “Brave”.
Teasers
Since the second of August, Perry began releasing teasers of songs on her VEVO page. The first teaser showed her a burning blue wig, which she wore in the 2010 video “ California Gurls ”, and the second showed the funeral of her signature outfit. The third teaser showed how a cat eats a bird, and the fourth, as it goes to a recording studio [2] [4] [5] [6] .
Criticism
Immediately after the release, Roar was recognized by critics and fans who marked a new direction. . Gerrick D. Kennedy of the Los Angeles Times called the track "cute and unforgettable sweetie." He also noted Perry's vocal performance. Rolling Stone also praised the song, giving 3.5 points in its review.
