Biography

Wilhelm Fleece was born on October 24, 1858 in Arnswald into an orthodox Sephardic Jewish family. Father V. Fliss engaged in the grain business and committed suicide when Wilhelm was nineteen.

V. Fliss studied medicine at the University of Berlin , after which in 1883 he worked first as a general practitioner and then as an otolaryngologist . I listened to lectures by Z. Freud on neuropathology in Vienna . In 1887 , Fliss and Freud met in person, which marked the beginning of their long friendship and extensive correspondence.

At the beginning of the century there was a gap between Freud and Fliess. V. Fliss publishes the pamphlet “ Pour ma propre cause ”, in which he accused Z. Freud of plagiarism, as well as disclosing his theory to young authors - O. Weininger and G. Freedom , who described half of Fliss's ideas in their writings. Z. Freud rejected the accusations and in response called Fleiss paranoid [2] . Letters of Freud to Fliss in 1937 were acquired by M. Bonaparte and subsequently - first partially, and then completely - published. [3]

After breaking up with Freud, W. Fliss continued to engage in private medical practice.

V. Fliss was married to the patient I. Breyer , Ide Bondi . Four children were born in the marriage - Robert , who later became a well-known psychoanalyst, Pauline, Conrad, and a stillborn daughter in 1902 [2] .

On October 13, 1928 , Wilhelm Fliess died of intestinal cancer .

Scientific activity

In 1890 , V. Fliss began to study biorhythms . Having studied the cycles of many of his patients, V. Fliss began to collect statistics on the frequency of temperature , childhood diseases and susceptibility to diseases [4] . V. Fliss believed that due to numerical ratios it is possible to determine the period of recovery after illness and to preset the year of death [5] . Using these statistics, V. Fliss believed that he had discovered the main periods in human life. Subsequently, V. Fliss developed two basic theories of biorhythms. According to the first theory, nature endows a person with an internal clock that starts the countdown from the moment of birth and continues to work throughout life. According to the second theory, some of these watches regulate a person’s physical cycle, consisting of 23 days, others - an emotional cycle, consisting of 28 days [4] .

He actively studied and investigated the problems of female sexuality , especially the relationship between menstruation and the organs of smell, genitals and the nasal mucosa . In 1897 , he announced the discovery of a syndrome called nasal reflex neurosis [5] .

He introduced the concepts of bisexuality , sublimation and sexual latent period, which were used by Z. Freud in the development of psychoanalysis .

Long before the publication of O. Weininger 's book “ Sex and Character ”, he developed in detail and systematically the idea and theory of bisexuality . He devoted a lot of work to this problem (1906), in which he proclaimed bisexuality the sovereign over all living things [5] .
