Suspects
Zodiac
The serial killer nicknamed Zodiac wielded in northern California and San Francisco from 1968 to 1969. Seven people were killed in his attacks, five of whom died. He was also famous for the biting letters he sent to local newspapers until 1974. The letters contained mysterious symbols and cryptograms. The identity of the killer has not been established. The possible involvement of the Zodiac in the Santa Rosa killings is indicated by [1] [36] the similarity of the incomprehensible symbol from his letter dated January 29, 1974 , where he claimed responsibility for the 37 murders, [37] and Chinese characters on the barrel with soy, which Kim Allen carried with her, [38] as well as his statement in a letter dated November 9, 1969 , where the Zodiac wrote that he would continue to change the way of killing from time to time and would not announce new killings [39] .
Arthur Lee Allen
Arthur Lee Allen, the main suspect in the Zodiac case, lived in a trailer in the Santa Rosa trailer park at the time of the killings [40] . In 1968, he was fired from a primary school in for suspicion of child abuse [41] . At the same time, he was a full-time student at Sonoma County State College [42] . On October 27, 1974, Allen was arrested by employees of the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office [43] for alleged sexual abuse of a minor [44] . On March 14, 1975, he was convicted and sentenced to prison at the State Hospital in , where he stayed until the end of 1977 [45] . Robert Graysmith writes in his book “ Zodiac Unmasked ” that chipmunk fur was found on the bodies of all the victims by the sheriff of Sonoma County. Arthur Lee Allen, according to the same book, collected and studied these animals [46] . Allen was the main suspect in the Zodiac case from 1971 to 2002, when the DNA analysis was excluded from the suspect after comparing his DNA with a partial Zodiac DNA profile obtained from saliva samples from envelopes that the Zodiac used for his letters [41] [47] . Also, the fingerprints of Allen did not coincide with those that were found in the car of the taxi driver Paul Stein , the victim of the Zodiac, [48] the palm imprint found on the letter of the Zodiac dated January 29, 1974, and handwriting samples [41] [49] .
Ted Bundy
Ted Bundy, a serial killer, was suspected of being killed in Santa Rosa [1] after being arrested for similar crimes in the states of Washington , Colorado , Utah and Idaho [50] . Bundy spent some time in the neighboring district of Marin , [51] but after analyzing the transactions of his bank cards and movements across the country in the 1970s and again in 1989, he was excluded from the number of suspects because at the time of the killings he was in Washington state [ 1] [2] [51] .
Other
The murder was suspected 41-year-old teacher of creative writing ( eng. Creative writing ) in a college in Santa Rosa, [52] who died in an accident on October 24, 1976 [53] . Among his belongings was a drawing depicting a sadomasochistic scene with the participation of Kim Wendy Allen, one of his former students [52] .
Also among the suspects for some time were the Los Angeles serial killers Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono, known as the " Hillside Stranglers " [2] .
