Ancient Saets ( Saetas antiguas )

Saets of this group are also known as "old" ( viejas ), "simple" ( llanas ), "folk" ( populares ) and others. Ancient saets appeared in Catholic Spain in the 17th century as a genre of anonymous spiritual song in the folk language, in imitation of the psalmody church (canonical) worship. The texts of the most common saet were timed to the time of repentance - for example, Lent and especially Holy Week. Performed outside the temple, during religious processions [1] . Melodically saets are very diverse - as a rule, music and text are syllabically coordinated; melismatic style is less used. For the melodically more developed saet, the Phrygian mood is characteristic. There are various local varieties ( saetas autóctonas ), such as, for example, saeta cuartelera in Puente Genil , ancient saets ( a rigor , samaritana and de la Vía Sacra ) in Castro del Rio and others. Throughout XX -XXI centuries they are strongly influenced by flamenco , and therefore the term “ flamenized saets ” ( saetas aflamencadas ) is used.

Saetas flamencas

The genre of Kante Hondo . The formation of the earliest varieties belongs to the period 1880-1909. [2] Performed by a soloist (woman or man) unaccompanied ( palo seco ). Traditionally timed to religious processions in the days of Holy Week. As a rule, they are much longer in time and more developed melodically than ancient Saets. The warehouse is monodic . The melody is abundantly ornamented with melisms , including using ecmelic microchromatics (Arabic roots are assumed in the melody and method of chanting). There are no metric accents in Saeta’s rhythm (this type of rhythm is usually called “free” or “improvisational”). Sometimes a saeta is performed to the quiet accompaniment of drums. The metric (with equal periods of duration) drum part is in no way consistent with singing; perhaps it symbolizes a slow measured step of the funeral procession, including imaginary (in case of concert performance). Varieties are singled out that are melodically close to certain flamenco genres - sigiriye ( saetas por seguiriyas ), martinet ( saetas por martinete ), etc.
