Career
He graduated from the Reading Football Academy, where he was considered a great talent and signed the first professional contract there in 1998. In 2000, he first appeared on the field in an official match within the League Cup. However, this match remained the only one for Ashdown in the 2000/01 season. The next season he played a little more - 4 matches. In 2002-03, he actively leased to various clubs of the lower divisions, where he played a total of about 2 dozen matches. In the 2003/04 season, due to an injury to the main goalkeeper of Reading Markus Hahnemann got his chance at the base and played for the capital club 10 matches in the English Premier League . However, he did not renew his expiring contract and in the summer of 2004 transferred to Portsmouth as a free agent, who also played in the top English division.
Initially, Jamie was invited there as a second goalkeeper, but due to the fact that the main goalkeepers - Halkias , Westerfeld regularly made a lot of mistakes in the goal, he played quite a lot - in the seasons 2004/05 and 2005/06 he played for the “pomp” in the Premier League about 40 matches. But with the arrival of more reliable Kelly and James in Portsmouth, the main goalkeeper no longer claimed to be a sweater.
The next 3 seasons, Jamie sat stably on the club’s bench, received a salary and occasionally played in cup competitions. Note that the goalkeeper became the winner of the FA Cup 2008, having never played in this competition. After Portsmouth left for the Championship, Ashdown left the team due to the expiration of the contract, but after the club lost David James , the club management preferred to quickly return Ashdown [1] . He returned and played almost more matches for the next season than for his entire previous career - 46. And after a season, Ashdown again knew the bitterness of relegation from the “pump” - this time in League 1 .
In connection with the well-known financial problems of Portsmouth, James was forced to look for a new club. In the summer of 2012, he went through reviews at Middlesbrough [2] and Leeds United - and if the first failed, the second culminated in a two-year contract [3] .
At Leeds, Ashdown had to learn the well-known role of the second goalkeeper behind Patrick Kenny . James never played for United in the 2012/13 Championship, but he regularly played for the new club in cup competitions. The goalkeeper has 4 matches in the League Cup and 4 more in the FA Cup .
During Leeds' pre-season preparations for the 2013/14 season, Ashdown was injured and did not take part in any of the friendlies [4] .
