Milk glass

Decorative bowl made of milk glass.

Milk glass (other names - deaf white or bone ) - opaque frosted glass, usually milky white, pressed in a variety of forms.

It was first made in Venice in the 16th century and was painted in various colors: blue, pink, yellow, brown, black, and also white, because of which it got its name in the end. In the 19th century it was often referred to as “opal glass”; by the end of the century, thanks to manufacturers who produced then-popular white products, the name "milk glass" was established.

The white color of the products was achieved by adding a muffler, for example, tin dioxide or bone ash [1] . The Brockhaus and Efron Dictionary provides the following prescription for the production of milk glass: potash - 44 parts, bone ash - 36, slaked lime - 2, table salt - 5 parts should be added to 100 parts by weight of sand [2] .

Usage

Milk glass collection.

At the end of the 19th century, the most popular products made of milk glass were decorative dishes (especially small glasses), lamps, vases, and jewelry. Products made for the rich layer of the Gilded Age society were known for their sophistication, soft color and design, but in the 1930s and 1940s, after the Great Depression, their production fell. One of the most famous works of opal-colored milk glass is the four dials on the watch, located on the facade of the New York Central Station .

Collecting

Works made of milk glass are often collectibles [3] . Modern glaziers continue to produce both original products and reproductions of popular collectibles and jewelry [4] .
