Methyl cellulose is an ether of cellulose and methanol, a white amorphous powder. It has the formula [C 6 H 7 O 2 (OH) 3-x (OCH 3 ) x ] n . Typical values are x = 1.4–2. It is soluble in cold (up to 50 ℃) water, some organic acids, alcohols and ethers. Insoluble in most organic solvents.

Content
Getting
Cotton or wood pulp , to increase its reactivity, is treated with an aqueous solution of NaOH , while the cellulose swells and a small amount of its low molecular weight part (1.5-7% of the total mass) passes into the solution. The processing product, called alkaline cellulose, is methylated with chloromethane in an autoclave at a pressure of 1.2–2.0 MPa [1] . The resulting methyl cellulose is washed with hot water, dried and crushed.
Application
Methyl cellulose is used as an adhesive, a thickener for paints and food products (E461), asbestos cement plasticizer , emulsifier and foaming agent.
Also, methyl cellulose is widely used in cinema to create various effects [2] .
