In the notes to the Black Box: The Complete Original Black Sabbath compilation (1970–1978) , Tony Iommi stated that the song’s name appeared when “ Gezer and Ozzie smoked cannabis outside and saw fairies in the park running around in their shoes. As far as I know, [the name] does not come from a skinhead attack ” [1] . After that, they wrote the text to "Fairies Wear Boots". In the classic Albums: Black Sabbath's Paranoid documentary, Geizer Butler states that the music for the song was actually inspired by a skirmish with skinheads, which the band members humiliatingly called “fairies” for the composition [2] .
An early version of Fairies Wear Boots, recorded on a John Peele radio show on April 26, 1970, was released as a bonus on Ozzy Osbourne's album The Ozzman Cometh . The song also entered the first compilation of the band We Sold Our Soul for Rock 'n' Roll .
