Biography
Born in 1977 in Moscow. In 1994 he graduated from an English special school 1214 on Mosfilmovskaya Street. In 1999 he graduated with honors from the Faculty of History of the Moscow State University. M. V. Lomonosov . In 2004 he defended his thesis on the topic “The Ukrainian National Movement in the Ukrainian SSR in the 1920–1930s”. Currently working at the Institute of Russian History, Russian Academy of Sciences . His research interests include the formation of nations and national identities in the East Slavic (Russian) ethnic space, the ideology and practice of Ukrainian nationalism , the ethnic history of Russia, the Russian Question. He is the author of two monographs and about 80 publications in Russian and foreign print and electronic publications. Serves as an expert on historical and socio-political issues on television and radio.
Criticism
Marchukov’s works are often criticized by professional historians.
Ukrainian historian Andrei Portnov argues that Marchukov’s book on the Ukrainian national movement is "beyond science," and the author "did not even make minimal efforts to make the text look at least partially neutral." Portnov notes the inconsistency in Marchukov's application of the constructivist paradigm (which, in Portnov's opinion, Marchukov appends only to the Ukrainian national project, leaving the question of the Russian nation within the framework of primordialism ); in the Ukrainian movement, Marchukov sees only a "denying dominant" based on "hatred" of Russia. In addition, according to Portnov, Marchukov’s work presents “arguments for the rehabilitation of totalitarianism in its extreme, Stalinist manifestation” [1] . According to historian Gennady Efimenko, Marchukov’s book is Ukrainophobic , and all the author’s assertions are deduced from the “axioms” about the thousand-year existence of the Russian world and the Russian great power; Nevertheless, he noted the introduction into science of a large number of previously unknown documentary sources and the pioneering nature of a study of this kind in Russian historical science [2] . According to the historian Mikhail Gaukhman, Marchukov, in his constructions, proceeds from the openly declared conservative and chauvinistic positions [3] . The historian Vladislav Verstiuk also believes that the “not very attractive” character of the Ukrainian national movement in Marchukov’s works is a direct consequence of the postulate that a “thousand-year-old Russian world” exists; according to Verstiuk, Marchukov’s attention is focused on finding random and subjective factors for the development of the Ukrainian national movement, although the author’s conclusions on his connection with the creation of the Ukrainian SSR he calls “quite acceptable” [4] .
The Polish-Belarusian historian Andrei Tikhomirov said the following about the works of Marchukov:
Marchukov’s texts are characterized by radical constructivism towards the Ukrainian nation (and a fully teleological interpretation of the Russian), the rehabilitation of Stalin’s totalitarianism, the apology of the “Soviet people” concept and the definition of the “Russian world” (it should include Russians, Belarusians and (only) Eastern Ukrainians) ... constructivist methodology is used not so much to deconstruct historical and political myths, as for the dissemination of Ukrainophobic discourse [5] .
Alexey Miller , a Russian historian, said that he was not interested in conducting polemics with authors such as Marchukov [6] , and described the text of Marchukov’s “Holodomor Operation” as “shameful” [7] (the leading Ukrainian researcher of the Holodomor Stanislav Kulchitsky said the same the article as “scandalous” [8] , and Andrei Portnov - as written “in the traditions of Soviet propaganda” [9] ). In a review of Marchukov’s monograph Ukraine in the Russian Consciousness. Mykola Gogol and his time ”Candidate of Philology Inna Bulkina expressed the opinion that“ we have a journalistic pamphlet rather than a historical study, and it hardly makes sense to make claims of a historiographical or literary criticism ”, and also said that Marchuk does not own tools and mechanisms of sociological analysis of mass consciousness, and the literary quotations used by him are often secondary [10] .
